DPR – Episode 10: Tank for Nolan?

Fantasy Strategy 101

In our tenth episode Paul and Peter begin with a debate about the “tanking” in fantasy hockey.

Is it a good strategy, is it morally correct or appropriate, how to do it correctly and when.

If you are going to tear down your fantasy team and rebuild through the draft, be sure to time it correctly with a year that has impact superstars worth tanking for like Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews in the previous two drafts.

Fantasy Ranking the 2017 NHL Entry Draft

In the second segment they cover that by looking ahead and reviewing the 2017 Fantasy Ranking the NHL Draft article. Unlike any other draft ranking the article is a consensus ranking for the 2017 entry draft based on fantasy value.

The article received contributions from both external independent scouts and DobberProspects scouts as well. Contributing authors include:

Steve Kournianos (@TheDraftAnalyst) – The Draft Analyst

Ryan Wagman (@RAWagman) – McKeens Hockey, Hockey Prospectus

Scott Wheeler (@scottcwheeler) – Future Considerations/Pension Plan Puppets

Mark Seidel (@MarkSeidel) North American Central Scouting

Brock Otten (@BrockOtten) – OHL Prospects

Anthony Mauro (@draftbuzzhockey) – Draft Buzz Hockey

Cam Robinson (@CrazyJoeDavola3) DobberProspects Senior Writer – Vancouver Canucks

Zachary DeVine (@zakkthebear) DobberProspects Senior Writer, The Hockey Writers – San Jose Sharks

Brad Phillips (@BradHPhillips) DobberProspects Senior Writer – Ottawa Senators/St. Louis Blues

Kevin LeBlanc (@kleblanchockey) – DobberProspects Associate Editor – Carolina Hurricanes

Joel Henderson (@dathockeydoe) DobberProspects Senior Writer  – Calgary Flames

Peter Harling (@pharling) DobberProspects Managing Editor, Co-Host DobberProspects Radio (@DPR_Show)

The news and media sites like TSN, SportsNet with Craig Button and Jeff Marek have excellent rankings but are not focused on fantasy hockey. Using draft lists that focus on NHL projected value can lead you making a draft day error like picking a Logan Stanley in the first round. Stanley is a excellent prospect, but not a very good fantasy value pick.

Players identified in this episode as better fantasy value or rising value prospects in the draft include Nico Hischier, Martin Necas, Kailer Yamamoto, and Nick Suzuki.

Players that have lower fantasy value or have declining projection include Maxime Comtois, Cal Foote, and Klim Kostin.

Interview with Steve Kournianos

The interview segment has a contributing author to the Fantasy Ranking the Draft article as Steve Kournianos from The Draft Analyst joins the show. The guys ask Steve why he ranked the following players higher than the consensus, Henri Jokiharju, Ian Mitchell, and Casey Mittelstadt. In addition they ask Steve to discuss prospects he did not rank inside his top 31 that did make the consensus ranking in Nick Suzuki, Cody Glass, Robin Salo and Matthew Strome.
