Development Watch

The first post-draft season is one of the most revealing checkpoints in a prospect’s development. A strong D+1 year can signal that a player is beginning to translate his draft-year traits into consistent impact while handling larger roles against tougher match-ups.

Across the WHL, recently drafted forwards  have taken clear steps offensively. Whether through increased responsibility, expanded usage, or improved puck touches, this group is starting to build momentum in their early development years.

Cameron Schmidt – RW – Dallas Stars

Few players in junior hockey have produced offense at Schmidt’s level this season. After scoring 40 goals in his draft year with the Vancouver Giants, the Dallas Stars prospect has continued to push his offensive ceiling while splitting time between Vancouver and the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Schmidt’s game revolves around pace and finishing ability. His explosive first steps and quick release allow him to attack defenders off the rush and turn small pockets of space into scoring opportunities. Scouts have consistently highlighted his shot and skating as two of the most dangerous tools in his arsenal.

Despite standing just 5-8, Schmidt plays with a high motor and has proven capable of producing offense consistently in junior. The biggest question moving forward will be how his skill and scoring instincts translate as the game becomes faster and more physical at the professional level.

For Dallas, Schmidt represents a high-upside swing the type of smaller scoring winger who could develop into a secondary offensive driver if his production continues trending upward.

Jacob Kvasnicka – RW – New York Islanders

Kvasnicka has quietly put together one of the strongest seasons in the WHL. Playing for the Penticton Vees, the Islanders prospect has been a steady offensive catalyst, finishing near the top of the league scoring race.

Kvasnicka’s offensive success is built around intelligence and puck distribution. He processes defensive coverage quickly and excels at extending offensive-zone possessions through quick puck movement and smart positioning. Rather than relying purely on speed or skill, his production often comes from manipulating space and reading developing plays.

That approach should translate well as he moves into the NCAA pipeline. The Islanders value structured forwards who can make efficient decisions with the puck, and Kvasnicka’s playmaking habits fit that mold.

His next development checkpoint will come against stronger competition at the collegiate level, where his processing speed and offensive creativity will be tested.

Nathan Behm – LW/RW – Chicago Blackhawks

Behm has continued to develop into one of the offensive drivers for the Kamloops Blazers during this season. The Chicago Blackhawks prospect has maintained strong scoring production while playing significant minutes in Kamloops’ offensive structure.

Behm’s offensive identity centers on his finishing ability. He consistently finds open ice around the slot and has shown the ability to convert chances at a strong rate when the puck reaches him in scoring areas. His ability to anticipate plays and arrive in the right spots has been a key factor in his offensive consistency.

For Chicago, Behm projects as a potential middle-six scoring winger if his offensive instincts continue to translate. Improving his pace and ability to drive play through the neutral zone will be important as he works toward the professional level.

Carter Bear – LW – Detroit Red Wings

Bear entered his season with significant expectations after being selected 13th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2025 NHL Draft. The Everett Silvertips forward had already established himself as one of the WHL’s most productive scorers after recording 40 goals and 82 points in 56 games during his draft year.

Bear’s game blends scoring touch with a competitive two-way motor. He plays through traffic well, drives the net consistently, and shows strong finishing ability in high-danger areas. Those traits helped him emerge as Everett’s offensive leader while earning WHL Western Conference Second All-Star Team honors.

If Bear continues building on that offensive foundation, he projects as a potential top-six scoring winger within Detroit’s developing forward core.

Tij Iginla – C/W – Utah Hockey Club

Few prospects entered their season with more attention than Iginla. The Kelowna Rockets forward was selected sixth overall in the 2024 NHL Draft after scoring 47 goals and 84 points in 64 games during his sophomore WHL season.

Iginla’s offensive game is built around power and finishing ability. He attacks the middle of the ice aggressively and consistently generates high-danger scoring chances. His ability to create offense under pressure has made him one of the most dangerous shooters in the WHL.

While expectations remain high given his draft pedigree, Iginla’s development path will likely focus on refining his puck distribution and play-driving ability. If those elements continue to evolve, he has the potential to become a top-six scoring forward at the NHL level.

Development Outlook

D+1 seasons rarely define a player’s NHL future, but they often reveal which prospects are beginning to separate themselves developmentally.

Schmidt’s scoring pace, Pickford’s offensive production from the blue line, and the steady progression of Kvasnicka and Behm all point toward encouraging early trajectories. Each prospect still has clear areas to refine, but the ability to produce consistently while taking on larger roles is an important step in the development process
