March 2013 – Mikkelson made the Tampa Bay roster after the lookout, but found himself in the press box most nights. He is now skating in the AHL again but is just a phone call away from being recalled. Jason Banks

August 2012 – Mikkelson is on the very cusp of becoming a good bottom pairing defenseman in the NHL. He has solid size, but does not use it overly efficiently, more for puck protection and being difficult to battle. He has surprisingly good mobility, and likes to push plays forward. He is yet to show he can chip in offensively in the NHL, but he is rather dependable for half a point per game in the AHL. There is not much of his game you can criticize, but he will not ‘wow’ you either. Tampa recently resigned him to a cheap one way contract, and is waiver eligible. (claimed before by Calgary) It would not be surprising for Mikkelson to make the Lightning as a depth defenseman, seventh or eighth man. If he is assigned to the AHL after clearing waivers or being claimed by another team, his NHL career may never get another opportunity to take flight.

Fantasy Outlook: D-

Very unlikely to ever appear on a fantasy roster, or your radar, has potential to be a solid, low pairing defenseman on a team needing depth.
