Observations:

June 2017 – Hellberg just completed his fifth season in the AHL, where he posted less-than-stellar numbers (2.95 GAA, .903 SV%) through 36 games on a last-place Hartford Wolfpack team. Entrenched as the Rangers’ third goalie the past two years and projected as a NHL backup at best, Hellberg recently signed with the KHL’s Kunlun Red Star for 2017/18. Overall, Hellberg has minimal fantasy hockey value in even the deepest of keeper leagues. Geoff Kent

December 2016 – In his second season under contract with the Rangers, the 25-year-old goalie remains entrenched in Hartford behind Raanta and Lundquist on the organizational depth chart.  Hellberg's numbers have dipped considerably this season (3.14 GAA, .895 %, 17 games) when compared to his totals from 2015-16 (2.14 GAA, .918 %, 53 games).  Hellberg will need to tighten up his play if he is to garner any consideration on Broadway beyond a short-term injury replacement. In his second season under contract with the Rangers the 25 yr old goalie remains entrenched in Hartford behind both Raanta and Lundquist on the organizational depth chart.  Hellberg's numbers have dipped considerably this season (3.14 GAA, 0.895 %, 17 gms) when compared with his posted totals from 15/16 (2.14 GAA, 0.918 %, 53 gms).  Hellberg will need to tighten up his play if he is to garner any consideration on Broadway beyond a short term injury replacement.  – Geoff Kent

July 2015 – New York Rangers have acquired the RFA goaltender Magnus Hellberg from Nashville in exchange for a 6th round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft on July first. 10 days later they signed him for a two-year contract. Hellberg is a big goalie who has lot of potential. He will be third in the pecking order behind Lundqvist and Raanta. He can get some NHL playing time if one of the previous two gets hurt, but most of the next season will spend in the AHL. Hellberg will split the starts with another promising Rangers prospect, MacKenzie Skapski. Last year the 24-year-old goalie appeared in 38 games with the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL, posting a 15-10-6 record along with a 2.33 goals-against average. If he can put together a good season and develops well, he has a solid chance to replace Antti Raanta as a backup goalie in 2016-17 NHL campaign. Jozsef Kurtosi

October 2014 – With Carter Hutton re-upped as the Predators backup for the next two years, Hellberg will likely have that time to prove that he is the goaltender of the future in Nashville. While that at one time looked like a certainty it is now very much in doubt. Marek Mazanec outplayed Hellberg for most of last year and when Rinne was on the IR it was Mazanec, not Hellberg, who was promoted to the big club. Additionally, Finnish national Jusse Saros has been lights out in Europe and is looking like a potential future star. The battle amongst Predators goalie prospects will be one to watch as Rinne ages. Hellberg has his work cut out for him however he is still very much in the mix. Donesh Mazloum

October 2013 – Pekka Rinne's month long trip to the IR opens the door for Hellberg to showcase his skills against NHL talent. While Carter Hutton has played well for the Predators thus far, Hellberg is clearly the goalie of the future and should get his fair share of starts while Rinne is out. Donesh Mazloum

August 2013 – Despite coming in to his rookie season in the AHL as the backup to Jeremy Smith, Hellberg's solid play saw the two goalies split games over the course of the season. In 39 games played Hellberg posted a stellar 2.14 GAA and .924 SV%, with 6 shutouts; numbers far superior to Smith's. Hellberg's exceptional play saw him get the starting nod in playoffs where, despite a first round elimination, he shined with a sparkling 1.69 GAA and .944 SV%. Hellberg's smooth assimilation to North American ice was likely the catalyst for the Predators organization's decision to cut ties with both Smith and fellow goaltending prospect Chet Pickard following the season. Hellberg is developing nicely as a prospect and is closing in on NHL readiness. Hellberg has an opportunity to show he can handle an increased workload as he will get the lion's share of the starts for the Admirals in the 2013/2014 season.  Donesh Mazloum

March 2013 – Magnus Hellberg is a tall, agile young netminder who plays a butterfly style and covers the lower net extremely well. He appears much smaller than he is when challenging shooters, and displays impressive leg drive and speed. While his glove hand is reliable, he will need to cover more of the net to advance as a professional.  Nashville is very patient with goalies and has two other prospects in their system (Chet Pickard and Jeremy Smith) that were also high draft picks. Smith is the heir apparent to Chris Mason as the backup to Pekka Rinne, so Hellberg’s road to the NHL may take him to another team. Hellberg has already moved ahead of Pickard (currently in the ECHL) and has proven to be a steady backup to Jeremy Smith for Nashville’s AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals. While he has played fewer games than Smith (23 vs. 41) his stat line is better: 2.39 GAA vs. 2.83 and a solid .918 SV% vs. .905. With 3 shutouts already, he has shown the mental focus to dominate at this level.

Fantasy Outlook: D

No. 3 on the Rangers' depth chart with an anchor and other puck-stoppers on the way, Hellberg signed with a KHL team in China.
