Individual Breakdown

The Edmonton Oilers prospect pool is… far from incredible, but for a team with Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, a likely Norris-finalist in Evan Bouchard, and Zach Hyman casually on pace for nearly 60 goals, that shouldn’t matter.

Unfortunately, it does matter, because the Oilers haven’t had the playoff success of teams like the Lightning and the Panthers who came before them (even the NY Islanders went to two straight conference finals!). A second-round exit last year, after being swept by the Avalanche in round three the year prior is just not enough for a team with two of the best players to ever lace them up.

What we are left with is a pool with some decent top-end talent, and a rapid fall off after the top-five.

Dylan Holloway was the consensus number one choice among all of our scouts, and I gave him his highest rating of 7.5. Holloway has been unimpressive in the NHL this season, but has continued to show flashes in the AHL. The 2020 14th overall pick has a big frame, and good shooting instincts, but is justifiably having trouble to adapt to the Oilers’ McDavid-esque speed of play.

It was somewhat surprising to not see a player like Holloway, or Xavier Bourgault, or Philip Broberg not get moved at the trade deadline, but it is entirely possible one of several of them change teams in the off-season.

Goaltender Oliver Rodrigue, who was given an overall ranking of 4.7 by our scouts has began to emerge as a real NHL option lately, and will likely rise in next season’s rankings.

Depth pieces like Brady Stonehouse and Carter Savoie may also pierce the NHL roster one day, but nothing is certain.

The Oilers need to capitalize on the incredible position they are in. We will have to wait and see if their prudent trade deadline moves will be enough.
