The Flyers finished as the fourth-worst team in the NHL last season with a 33-39-10 record in 2024-25. Flyers GM Daniel Briere acquired Trevor Zegras from Anaheim to add much-needed skill in the forward group. A relatively quiet free agency addressed depth issues at center (Christian Dvorak), defense (Noah Juulsen), and goaltending (Dan Vladar). Philadelphia is banking on improvement under new head coach Rick Tocchet next season with the bulk of their prospects still need some time before joining the NHL.

NHL Draft Recap

Round 1, 6 overall: Porter Martone, RW

Martone dominated the OHL last season totaling 98 points in 57 games for the Brampton Steelheads. Due to a run on the center position in the 2025 NHL Draft, Martone fell to the Flyers at 6^th overall when most publications had him ranked as a top three selection. He is a winger with size and plus-scoring ability who could prove to be an excellent compliment to Matvei Michkov. 

Martone is due to join Michigan State (NCAA) for the 2025-26 season, where he will join second-round pick Shane Vansaghi in the quest for an NCAA Championship in 2025-26. He could be a late season addition for the Flyers following the conclusion of the NCAA schedule after expressing an intent to try to make the Flyers out of training camp this season. Martone is expected to play for Team Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships in December 2025.

Round 1, 12 overall: Jack Nesbitt, C

Philadelphia traded a pair of late first round picks to move up to 12^th overall to select a 6-5 center who registered 64 points in 65 games for the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL. Nesbitt is a rangy, high-IQ center which helps him on both sides of the puck. He is expected to return to Windsor for his third OHL season in 2025-26. 

Round 2, 38 overall: Carter Amico, RD

A rangy, right-handed defenseman out of the U.S. National Team Development Program (NTDP), Amico posses first-round potential but he was limited to 13 games in 2024-25 due to a kneecap injury. A plus skater for his size, the 6-5 blueliner will join Flyers’ prospect Jack Murtagh at Boston University (NCAA) for the 2025-26 season. 

Round 2, 40 overall: Jack Murtagh, C

Murtagh registered 53 points in 56 games for the NTDP during the 2024-25 campaign. He added six points in seven games as the USA captured a bronze medal at the 2024-25 IIHF U18 World Championships.  Murtagh may get the chance to play alongside Flyers prospect Owen McLaughlin, a seventh-round selection by the Flyers in 2021.

Round 2, 48 overall: Shane Vansaghi, RW

The 48^th overall pick totaled 16 points in 37 games for Michigan State (NCAA) in 2024-25. With a heavy-hitting incoming freshman class, including Martone, it will be interesting to see where Vansaghi fits in the lineup. He is a hard-working forechecker who can help retrieve pucks for high-caliber scorers in the Spartans lineup in 2025-26. Amico, Murtagh, and Vansaghi could all be a part of Team USA’s squad seeking a third-straight IIHF World Junior Championship in December.

Round 2, 57 overall: Matthew Gard, C

A 6-5 center from Red Deer (WHL), Gard doubled his total from 18-points in 2023-24 to 36-points (including 19 goals) in the 2024-25 season. He tallied four points in seven games in Canada’s gold medal-winning effort at the 2024-25 IIHF U18 World Championships. Gard is expected to return to Red Deer for a third WHL season, where he will rejoin Flyers fifth-round pick, Luke Vlooswyk. 

Round 5, 132 overall: Max Westergard, LW

An under-sized winger from Frolunda HC (SHL), Westergard registered 50 points in 41 games at the J-20 Nationell level which earned the teenager a full-time role in the SHL playoffs. He totaled three points in 11 games against much older and more seasoned compeition. Westergard is expected to return to a full-time role for Frolunda in the SHL during the 2025-26 season. 

Round 5, 157 overall: Luke Vlooswyk, RD

Vlooswyk is a 6-5, right-handed blueliner who registered 17 points in 68 games for Red Deer (WHL) during the 2024-25 season. The Calgary-born blueliner is expected to return to the WHL where he has spent parts of three seasons since 2022-23.

Round 6, 164 overall: Nathan Quinn, C

Quinn finished with 46 points in 54 games for the Quebec Remparts (QMJHL) in the 2024-25 season. The teenage center will move to Northeastern University (NCAA) for the 2025-26 campaign.

Risers

Alex Bump, W – Bump received a short sample of pro hockey during the 2024-25 when he skated in the final three regular-season games and seven playoff contests for the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms in 2024-25. The 21-year-old flashed his skills and looked like the best player on the ice during the 2025 Flyers Development Camp in July 2025. After winning an NCAA Title last season, can the 6-0 forward dangle his way to a top-nine roster spot filled with talented wingers or his he bound for a top-six spot in the AHL? 

Jett Luchanko, C – After 56 points in 46 OHL games on a bad Guelph Storm squad, there are questions about how much benefit there is for Luchanko to return to the OHL. Like Bump, he played in nine regular-season games for the Phantoms, before adding six assists over seven playoff games. Luchanko has already signed his NHL entry-level contract, which eliminates the potential for playing in the NCAA, and at 19-years-old, he is not yet eligible to appear in the AHL full-time so an NHL spot may be his best development path moving forward. 

Yegor Zavragin, G – Zavragin reached the highest level of Russian hockey in the KHL with one of its most prominent teams, SKA St. Petersburg, during the 2024-25 season. The 19-year-old netminder impressed with a 17-11-9 record, 2.55 goals against average (GAA), and 0.912 save percentage (SV%). Those stats earned a three-year contract extension from St. Petersburg to continue his development in the second-best hockey league in the world.

Fallers

Aleksei Kolosov, G – Kolosov struggled in both the NHL and AHL last season as he adjusted to life in North America. The 23-year-old goal flashed potential at times but wasn’t consistent enough for NHL duty with a 5-9-1 record, a 3.59 GAA, and a .867 SV% in 17 NHL games for Philadelphia. In 12 AHL games for Lehigh Valley, Kolosov recorded a 5-6-1 mark, a 3.11 GAA, and a .884 SV%. The Belarusian goalie swung back and forth between the AHL to the NHL like a yo-yo last season with the Flyers electing to carry three netminders throughout the season. A full season with the Phantoms could help develop the netminder’s potential.  

Samu Tuomaala, W – The 22-year-old tallied 32 points in 46 games in Lehigh Valley, but his season was cut short following a lower-body injury in March. If Tuomaala rebounds well from the injury, he could find himself on the ‘Risers’ section next off-season. It is worth noting that the Flyers have added a ton of high-caliber wingers to the organization’s depth chart since selecting Tuomaala in the second round in 2021.  

Massimo Rizzo, C – Rizzo recorded 18 points over 46 games for Lehigh Valley in the 2024-25 season, but he did not appear in the AHL playoffs. With incoming wingers like Denver Barkey or Alex Bump potentially on the horizon, the 24-year-old center could have a big rebound season with more talent on the Phantoms in 2025-26.

Likely to see NHL action

Emil Andrae, D – The 23-year-old defenseman recorded seven points in 42 NHL games and 16 points in 25 AHL contests in 2024-25. He could compete for more consistent usage in 2025-26.

Porter Martone, W – Do not be shocked to see Martone sign his pro contract following the conclusion of Michigan State’s 2025-26 season. If he does, the winger likely slots into the Flyers top six immediately. 

Jett Luchanko – C – Philly is in a tricky spot with the best development path for Luchanko. Either send him back to a bad OHL team where Guelph was 21-38-5 last season or give him an NHL roster spot at 19-years-old.

Final thoughts

The Flyers could push for a playoff spot in 2025-26 with improved goaltending, or they could find themselves picking among the top 10 for the fourth time in the last five seasons. Philadelphia will be worth watching, particularly if the combined creativity between Zegras and Michkov produces offensive results. It will be a young team continuing to learn how to win in the NHL under Tocchet, who claimed the 2024 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s best coach just two seasons ago in 2024. It is sure to be a much different vibe then the John Tortorella-experience over the last few years in Philly.
