Observations:

October 2016 – Martinsen has earned a spot on the opening-night NHL roster yet again on the Avalanche. With the excessive amount of depth forwards in Colorado, his spot on the fourth line is not to be taken for granted, but is also a more valuable spot to be in. He brings marginal fantasy value (expect around 15 points), but will bring hits and PIM to the table as well. Dont expect him to move up the depth chart, as higher-ceiling gritty types Compher and Greer are in development and will surpass him very soon. Hayden Soboleski

 

June 2016 – Colorado has signed Martinsen to a one-year, one-way NHL contract. Despite being a healthy scratch throughout the year, he occasionally showed value as a fourth-liner able to have a net-front prescence and able to hold his own in the hard-to-get-to areas. Dont expect much more than we saw last season (around 55 games played, a dozen or so points). Hayden Soboleski

 

December 2015 – Martinsen has been a stable member in the Avs bottom-six, as coach Roy loves his gritty game. He has managed four points in 14 games, but clearly driving play isnt the reason he has stuck (given his awful relative corsi of -12.1). He has gotten in the coach's good books among a log-jam of bottom-six candidates, so we can expect Martinsen to stick around in the NHL for now. Hayden Soboleski

 

November 2015 – As an injury sidelines Alex Tanguay, Andreas Martinsen has been called up to the Avalanche roster. He has not been a notably productuve member of the AHL Rampage (two points in nine games), but given his NHL role will be on the fourth line (which recieves very few minutes under coach Roy), the team clearly favored a more physical and experienced prescence. Hayden Soboleski

 

September 2015 – Martinsen often stood out from his less-expereinced competition in Avalanche camps over the summer, but has been assigned to the AHL to start the season. If injuries give him any prolonged time in the NHLas a call-up, his physical edge and presence in a talented bottom-six could give him value in  deeper multi-cat fantasy leagues. Hayden Soboleski

 

May 2015 – Martinsen has been signed by the Colorado Avalanche after three years playing professionally for Dusseldorf in the German League (DEL). Strength and has always been the forte of Martinsen, whose mean side racked up 99 PIM in 50 games the 2014-15 campaign, and his offensive instinct has been progressing every year leading to a career-high 41 points this season. He also added five points in 12 playoff games this year in the first post-season appearance of his career.

Despite his strength, size, and experience, the offensive side of Martinsen’s game may prove a large obstacle to adjusting to the North American game. In 2012-13 he was forced to leave the SHL for the less competitive DEL in order to work on all aspects of his game, but since signing with Dusseldorf has been progressing offensively every season while maintaining his knack for piling up PIMs. His contract with Colorado is only for one year, so his ability to contribute this season (most likely in the AHL but possibly in a fourth-line role) will determine his long-term value with the Avalanche. Hayden Soboleski

 

Fantasy Outlook: C-

A strong and experienced player with a notable mean streak and who’s offensive progression in the DEL hopefully translates to the North American playing style.
