Connor McDavid, C
Hometown: Richmond Hill, ON, CAN
Drafted: 2015 by Edmonton Oilers, 1st overall
November 2015 – In a tragic turn of events for the Oilers and their fans, McDavid has sustained a broken clavicle that requires surgery. The injury will put him out of action until possibly the trade deadline and hampers an already weakened forward corps. He had amassed five goals and 12 points through the first 13 games of the season. This now opens the door for Leon Draisaitl to be a permanent member of the roster this season. Tyler Thomson
October 2015 – To no one's surprise, McDavid leads the Oilers in goals (5) and points (10) through ten games. The recent line combination of McDavid, Yakupov and Pouliot has been electric and unquestionably the top line on the team. With his top-tier play and scoring prowess, it will be hard to consider McDavid a prospect for much longer. He could easily be drafted in the top-10 of fantasy leagues next season. Tyler Thomson
September 2015 – McDavid notched two assists in the Oilers first pre-season win over the Flames. He looked every bit as dominant as he has throughout training camp and was paired with Draisaitl and Yakupov, a potent trio. While Yakupov certainly has a spot and McDavid is sure to make the big club, it will be interesting to see if Draisaitl stays for the entire season and if this line could be a potential connection at some point this season. Tyler Thomson
September 2015 – After showing off his extreme puck handling skills and being showcased on numerous youtube videos from fans at the Oilers rookie camp, McDavid hype continues rampantly. Most pundits and hardcore Oiler followers are predicting McDavid will centre the second line. Tyler Thomson
June 2015 – Needless to say, McDavid should be scooped up in all leagues fairly early. If you`re in a dynasty or keeper league even more so. Don`t be surprised if he goes in the first round in some keeper leagues, possibbly even first overall. While it may not be worth it to jump on him THAT early, there are extremely high hopes going into his first season. Expect to be fed constant "McJesus" news as training camp nears. Tyler Thomson
June 2015 – The Edmonton Oilers select exceptional forward Connor McDavid 1st overall at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Brendan Ross
May 2015 – Capping off one of the best OHL seasons in modern day history, McDavid loaded up in hardware winning the OHL's Red Tilson Trophy as the league's most outstanding player, Wayne Gretzky's 99 Award as the OHL Playoffs MVP and OOHL Scholastic Player of the Year. He had an outstanding playoffs leading the Otters to the Championship before falling to the Oshawa Generals in five games but managed to lead the post-season in goals (28), assists (21) and points (49) falling just a few points short of setting the OHL record for most points. He has now played his final major junior season and will undoubtedly turn professional next season. While not "official" until Edmonton picks first overall, Connor McDavid will don the Oilers jersey and help them take the next step. Brendan Ross
February 2015 – There's been no change in Connor McDavid's play over the past month as the top draft eligible skater continues to "wow" fans and scouts with his tremendous play. As of February 25th (see video highlight below), McDavid is currently in the middle of a 21-game point streak where he has rattled off 18 goals and 50 points. In fact, the young phenom has only been held off the score sheet once in 37 games this year (Nov. 6th vs. Niagara) and has registered 36 goals and 98 points – 12 back from the leading scorer. Since returning from his hand injury and the World Juniors, McDavid has broke twine 20 times and scored 47 points in 19 games, clipping along at 2.65 points/game over the course of the season. From a skill standpoint, McDavid continues to raise his own "exceptional" bar and his ceiling appears nearly limitless at this point in time. His ability to generate speed through the neutral zone is remarkable. Few players are able to actually speed up when in possession of the puck like McDavid does. With only a few games remaining in Erie's regular season, all eyes are on #97 to see whether he can push Mitch Marner, Dylan Strome and Christian Dvorak for the league scoring title. Brendan Ross
January 2015 – Connor McDavid returned from his broken hand injury just in time to help Canada to a gold medal at the 2015 World Junior, posting a tournament leading eight assists to go with his three goals for 11 points in seven games. Since returning to the OHL post-World Juniors, McDavid has been on absolute fire including putting on a show at the CHL/NHL Top Prospects on and off-ice testing. Scouts candidly spoke to how impressive his testing was during the on-ice portion calling him the "best they've ever seen". McDavid finished first in the on-ice testing portion which included 10 specialized drills. Brendan Ross
November 2014 – In a fight on November 11th, Connor McDavid injured his hand and is out indefinitely. McDavid will undergo testing to determine the extent of the injury but both his participation in the SUBWAY Super Series looks unlikely and the star forward is in jeopardy of missing the 2015 World Under-20 Junior Championships in Montreal/Toronto. Connor McDavid leads all Canadian Hockey League players in scoring with 16 goals and 51 points through 18 games. Brendan Ross
October 2014 – Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid has been named to the OHL’s roster for the upcoming Subway® Super Series and will compete in both games on November 13th and 17th in Peterborough and Kingston, respectively. The top ranked prospect for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, McDavid has blasted out of the gates to start the season with eight goals and 25 points in his first nine games to lead the Ontario Hockey League. With all eyes on McDavid, he will surely be part of Team Canada’s Under-20 World Junior Team come December. Brendan Ross
June 2014 – It’s been since Sidney Crosby that we’ve witnessed a generational talent come along via the draft and Connor McDavid might be the next closest thing. Granted exceptional status in 2012 making him eligible to play in the OHL as an underage skater, Connor McDavid was selected 1st overall by the Erie Otters shortly thereafter. Skating with the Toronto Marlboros as an underage forward, McDavid posted 79 goals and 209 points in 88 GTHL games. Once he joined the Erie Otters in his rookie season, McDavid finished second in rookie scoring with 25 goals and 66 points and earned the Emms Family Award as the OHL Rookie of the Year. McDavid also captured the “Best Forward Award” and MVP honours at the Under-18 Championship finishing with atop the scoring charts in goals (8), assists (6) and points (14) helping Canada win the gold medal.
In his OHL sophomore season, McDavid tallied 28 goals and 99 points in 58 games with the Otters and added another four points in seven games at the 2014 Under-20 World Junior Championships as a double underage player, a rare feat. The young prodigy took home both the CHL and OHL’s “Scholastic Player of the Year” awards as the nation’s top student. In addition, McDavid expanded his trophy case to add the William Henley Trophy as the OHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player.
Connor McDavid is truly an exceptional player in every sense of the term. He brings top-notch speed, elite hockey sense and off-the-charts creativity. His ability to control the tempo of the game is unmatched anticipating plays and opponents perfectly. McDavid is a cerebral player who exploits seams and soft areas well, all while making the players around him better. He handles the puck with precision and can execute difficult passes on both his fore and backhand. Playing with an aura of confidence, McDavid sets up behind or to the side of the net and quickly strikes as he cuts to the front of the net – a move that he has made his own and one that works almost every time. He is a fearless competitor in that sense. Stemming from his overall hockey sense, McDavid is an astute offensive player but is also dedicated to providing back pressure as well. Connor McDavid is projected as the top prospect available for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Brendan Ross
