Hey all Dobber Network fans,
This will be my first attempt at a ‘Ramblings’ and I’ve picked a large stage to do it! Today, all you will see here is any draft coverage, updates, news ect. on prospects, hopefully as it happens. You can go elsewhere to get applets to give you info, you can follow twitter for small news, but here today will hopefully be your one stop shop for everything prospect related on the draft and updated picks in an easy user friendly format.
“On behalf of the Colorado Avalanche organization, I would first like to thank the city of New Jersey for hosting this great event, also congratulate the Chicago Blackhawks on winning this year’s Stanley Cup and recognize the city of Calgary and tell them our hearts are with you during the recovery of the flooding. With the first selection of the 2013 Entry Draft… The Colorado Avalanche select… Nathan MacKinnon of the Halifax Mooseheads!” Anyone want to take bets that this will be the basic outline of the first selection speech? I’m going take the bait from Joe Sakic, he is a straight shooter and I’m on board with them selecting McKinnon… That said I feel Seth Jones would be the feel good/better choice for the organization, having home grown talent and son of a star in another sport go first overall, for marketing.
I for one am glad that they took it off prime time on Friday night and are not holding more rounds on Saturday… Now I had the option of using my weekend and still enjoying ‘Trade N’ Draft’ day.
Personally I feel goalies will be the most interesting today… Who selects Zach Fucale? Where does Cory Schneider go? Does Etienne Marcoux get selected? (He was passed up last year, played in the Subway Super Series, played very strong this year, was 27th on NHL.com’s draft rankings mid-year, then fell off the board on the final rankings) Who picks up Patrik Bartosak? (he is 20 now and will turn pro right away coming off a very strong season for Red Deer)…
Had a talk with Justin Goldman today, he mentioned that Montreal, LA, Jersey and Philly are likely to pick up goalies, and I would add Toronto and the Rangers and Vancouver. Montreal of course you would expect to go French, but Eric Comrie and Evan Crowley attended a private scouting combine with the Canadiens. New Jersey has the best crack at Zach Fucale, but I feel they will pass at 9th with Scott Wedgewood in the system as does Justin, Philly would be next… I would not be surprised to see a team jump into Dallas’s 10th if they covet Fucale or Philly drop down a couple positions if they feel he will still be there…
Working from the backend out, Nik Zadorov, Darnell Nurse, Ras Ristolainen, Mirco Mueller, Shea Theodore, Sam Morin, Robert Hagg, Dillon Heatherington, Mitch Wheaton… a few teams could snag some pretty sizable and talented defense in the top 2 rounds… or look for offense from the smaller Ryan Pulock, Chris Bigras, Josh Morrissey, Jordan Subban… Personally I’m more comfortable selecting a Jaime Oleksiak than a Ryan Murphy (14th and 12th in 2011), as sexy as Murphy is in fantasy hockey perspectives, he has higher risk of translating the game to pro…
Is it odd that I hear more news on Sean Monahan, Bo Horvat and Valentin Zykov with speculations that teams are trying to move up to get these players than Jonathan Drouin… sure there has been enough news about teams trying to get into the top 3 or picks possibly being open to movement, but the other 3 seem to be making more news the past week or so and many see them as outside the top 5…
Let’s not forget some players re-entering the draft after not being signed that some teams may have interest in:
Brenden Kichon – 259 points in his last 234 WHL games for Spokane, and he is a defenseman… he SUCKS and would not be able to help provide the Islanders offensive help knowing they were losing Streit… should go earlier than 5th round this time as he will also turn pro this year…
Shane McColgan – 294 points in 315 Junior games, Rangers didn’t have room for him with the wealth of offensive prospects they had… look for him to go again in middle round and turn pro also.
Zach Yuen – 44 points on the blue line last year for Tri City but Jets
