October 2013 – After signing with the Bruins as a UFA, Johnson finally landed a full-time job as an NHL backup. In his first start as a Bruin he allowed just two goals, but faced only 16 shots. And that start took over three weeks into the season to happen. That’s likely how the year will play out – starts few and far between – unless Tuukka Rask gets hurt. – Dobber

April 2013 – With impending changes coming in Phoenix’s crease, questions will be surrounding Johnson. He looks to be finishing this season as a UFA, but so are Mike Smith and Jason Labarbera. Phoenix’s well documented ownership issue has been causing established players to be sensitive to sign on without knowing where their home may be, Smith being the latest to make it known. It is in the Coyote’s best interests to lock up both their current net minders while they are fringe contenders, but they also need to look at development and the room needed for their prospects. Should Smith finally sign, it would likely be Labarbera allowed to walk and Johnson could be vaulted into the cheap backup role. After almost 170 AHL starts, he is ready to see regular ice at the top level somewhere to see if he can handle NHL shooters. While Johnson himself is not an overly talented goalie, he is the type that can make the regular saves and allow NHL systems in front of him to do the rest. With a few NHL veterans retiring, it is likely Johnson finds himself an opportunity somewhere, which makes him a good goaltender for fantasy managers to keep an eye on, as he has been hidden from most people’s radar.

Fantasy Outlook: C

His ceiling is as a backup capable of putting together a strong string of starts when needed, but he is nearing the point that he needs to make it or break it.
