Riley Sheahan, C
Hometown: St. Catherines, ON
Drafted: 2010 by Detroit Red Wings, 21st Overall
March 2015- In his first go around in Detroit, Sheahan suited up in 42 games in which he was an impressive plus-eight to go along with nine goals and 15 assists for 24 points. His strong play in a time when the Wings were in need helped solidify his place amongst the NHL regulars for the 2015 season. Mike Babcock hasn’t been afraid to throw Sheahan out in any situation either as evidence by his 2:22 PP TOI, 0:35 SH TOI and 15:32 total time on ice per game. Sheahan’s current production is right in line with a year ago as he produces on the scoresheet at around a 0.5 point-per-game clip registering 12G-22A-34PTS in 69 games this season along with a 51.5% of faceoff wins which for a 23 year old is rather impressive. What you see is what you get from Sheahan who has acclimated himself well in Detroit and has proven he belongs and is a rather invaluable player being able to slide up and down the lineup without missing a beat. A glue guy that helps you more on the ice and in the real lineup rather than the fantasy one. Travis Watson
September 2014- Riley Sheahan was pushed into the fire last season after the Wings were decimated with injuries and he more than held his own. Brining calm, poise and production to a team that desperately needed it. Sheahan and his linemates the Tomas’, Tatar and Jurco helped ignite the fire on route to a 23rd consecutive playoff appearance. Detroit already was high on the St. Catherines, Ontario native having nabbed him with the 21st overall selection in the 2010 draft and Sheahan’s play in 2014 didn’t waver that assessment it helped boost it. Travis Watson
January 2014 – Up for his second recall, Riley Sheahan scored his first career NHL goal on route to a 3-1 win over the LA Kings (1/11/2014). Filling in for the magic man Pavel Datsyuk and speedy Darren Helm, who are both out with injury, Sheahan has brought new life and energy to his game this time around. The 6’2″ pivot now has five points through nine games this season and despite some bumps like a minus-3 outing versus the visiting Blues, Sheahan looks like a player that isn’t far away from making day-to-day contributions in the NHL. See below to observe Sheahan score his first as a member of the Red Wings. Travis Watson
December 2013 – Sheahan made his season debut on December 17th to play in his third career NHL game. Sheahan has been recalled to help patch up the depleted roster due to the never ending list of injuries. The Red Wings have been fortunate with injuries over the years and its in times like these where championship teams are built and their depth is certainly being tested now. Travis Watson
June 2013 – Riley Sheahan, a rookie for the Grand Rapids Griffins was able to build off a solid regular season by leading the team in assists and tying for third in team playoff scoring at 16 points with Luke Glendening and Landon Ferraro. Look for Sheahan to play out the 2013/2014 season in Grand Rapids where he and the team will look to repeat as Calder Cup Champs. Travis Watson
December 2012 – Is adjusting nicely to the pro game with 11 points in 27 games thus far. Needs to find the score sheet more often and will likely need to lead the Griffins in scoring in the future years before considered for a role in Detroit. His size is very attractive going forward and is already NHL quality. Jason Banks
April 2012 – Sheahan has decided to forego his final collegiate season to sign a pro contract with the Wings. He will begin at Grand Rapids in the AHL. Rich Dillon
February 2012 – Showing slow but steady progress in his junior season at Notre Dame, Sheahan is having his best collegiate year. He has soft hands and is capable in all situations, including being a fine penalty-killer. Rich Dillon
Sheahan is ready now and his offense is translating well to the NHL level. His upside is probably the second line.
