Mark Arcobello, C
Hometown: Milford, CT
Undrafted – Signed by Edmonton Oilers 2013
June 2014 – After an impressive start to his NHL season (10 points in his first 10 games), Arcobello became the victim of the numbers game – and the lack of “Golden Boy” status. As a small player and an undrafted player, he will not get the opportunities of, say, a first-round draft pick (ahem, Sam Gagner). When Gagner returned from injury, Arcobello was relegated to the checking line and, soon enough, the press box. And then the AHL. But he did sign a one-way NHL contract for 2014-15 so there is still hope. Dobber
June 2013 – He is an offensive wizard at lower levels who flirts with point-per-game type numbers most seasons in his career thus far and loves to shoot the puck despite being known as a playmaker. Even with his vertically challenged frame, he is always noticeable in games. He has good potential, especially playing amongst star players, but questions will arise if he has the flat out talent to play in the NHL, amongst the top tier players that he gives away half a foot too, at full speed. Edmonton has recently resigned him to a single season pact, but he likely starts again in the AHL as the Oilers already have 10 players locked up with Sam Gagner and Magnus Paajarvi as RFAs. Recent rumors have Shawn Horcoff and Alas Hemsky, while looking to acquire more picks and a solid bottom six forward or a top pairing defenseman, should both vets be moved, there may be opportunity for Arcobello. He reminds me of a lower hyped T.J. Hensick, unfortunately his size makes the odds against his securing an NHL role, but may surprise as a depth type player and help development of other talent at the AHL level.
Fantasy Outlook: C+
He has shown ability to post solid numbers and duplicate them in a top six role amongst the current talent in Edmonton, but the numbers game is seeing to it that he will probably not get a fair shot at a top six role. Tough hill to climb, but there’s still hope.
Discussion on what Arcobello brings to OKC when he was first brought into the organization.
