Individual Breakdown

Overall, three was little discrepancies between ranks as overall the general consensus is this is a pretty weak and shallow prospect pool. The top ranked player is winger William Dufour who was ranked as high as a seven by Peter, Curtis, and Mark and as low as a three from Victor. The only other players to score a five or better were Samuel Bolduc and Ruslan Iskhakov meaning there is little help coming down the pipe. Calle Odelius was a polarizing player with an overall ranking of 4.7, he was scored as high as six by Peter, Puneet, and Aaron, and as low as 2 from Hayden and a three from Dobber. The Islanders may be a desirable destination for free agent prospects coming from the NCAA and CHL as the opportunity to make this team is the path of least resistance in the NHL.

Team Overview

Last year we ranked the Islanders at 30th overall saying the future was bleak. They are still one of the older teams in the NHL with an average age of 29.6 years old. They still have significant cap space dedicated to older players, and with significant term as well. The team is on the outside looking in for a playoff position and now ranks second last in the prospect pool rankings.

Things will get worse before they get better on Long Island!

The Islanders have been quick to trade away first round picks and top prospects, a maneuver typically employed by contending teams. The Islanders have not made a first round selection since 2019 when they selected Simon Holmstrom with the 23rd overall pick. Holmstrom barely made our rankings with a 2.3 score. His Fantrax roster ship however remains the highest at 10% so if you have fantasy stock in Holmstrom, we highly recommend a trade while you can.

The Islanders currently still hold their 2024 first round selection and have only traded their third, and seventh round picks. They will need to hit on two or three of their 2024 selections to help build up their prospect pool.

Another concern facing the team is the clock is ticking to sign their seventh ranked prospect Alex Jefferies by August 15th, 2024, or he will become a free agent.

It may be a long road to redemption for the Long Islanders.
