Observations:

July 2014 – Kabanov was waived by the Islanders and is a free agent. He’s playing in the Swedish League

January 2014 – After contributing in a minimal role in Bridgeport, Kabanov has been loaned to MoDo of the Swedish league. Things just haven’t come together for the young Russian and maybe a stint back on the big ice will ignite something in him. This may be a last ditch effort by the Isles who are clearly frustrated with their prospect. Thus far Kabanov has suited up for MoDo in one game and didn’t figure in on the score sheet. November 2013 – Kabanov is back with the Sound Tigers in the AHL after posting four goals and four assists in eight games with Stockton of the ECHL. The team could use his offensive gifts if he has righted the ship after somewhat of a rollercoaster start to the year. With so much raw talent, you can’t help but pull for the youngster to get things on the right track. Brad Wilson

October 2013 – Kabanov has been demoted to the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL. After joining the Gary Roberts camp this summer, it looked like the young Russian was going to finally take a much anticipated step forward. However, after an uneventful Islanders camp and just two games in a Sound Tigers jersey, it looks like he may have slipped the other way. An apparent attitude problem saw him suit up for three different teams during his junior career. He was sent home from the lsles prospect camp last year after repeatedly being late. Now he’s been reassigned to the ECHL after posting a power play goal and a minus-two in the first two games of the season for Bridgeport. A clear sign he hasn’t matured at the rate the lsles brass would like. This could be a wake-up call, but in the second year of a three year contract, time is running out for the talented 21-year-old. Brad Wilson

October 2013 – Kabanov was loaned to the Sound Tigers of the AHL after an uneventful preseason with the big club. Brad Wilson

September 2013 – Kabanov saw only 8-minutes of ice time in the first exhibition game for the Islanders. He was a minus-1 in the loss. It looks like an extreme long shot for Kabanov to see any regular season time as an Islander this year, but it is still very early. The limited playing time clearly shows where he falls on the Isles depth chart. The talent is definitely there but he needs to see time with skilled players in a top-six role not as a 4th line checker. Perhaps a season as a Sound Tiger will help to push him towards his potential. Brad Wilson

March 2013 – A serious wrist laceration took Kabanov out of the lineup early in his pro career. Now recovered, he’s still getting his timing back….He’ll need to stay healthy in 2013-14 and make strides, because his stock has fallen…Loads of raw talent is still there. Dobber

March 2012 – Kabanov’s development path has been interesting to say the least, but the move to Shawinigan has been great for his development.  He’s more consistent and is having his most productive QMJHL season to date with 50 points in 46 games.  Kabanov has great hands and plays with a lot of energy but has a questionable track record.  He may take some time to adjust at the next level. Derek LeBlanc

Fantasy Outlook: C+

Kabanov has top six talent and the Islanders lack of depth at right wing could accelerate his path to the NHL, however he has had trouble putting it all together at the pro level.
