Observations:

March 2015 – The Oklahoma City Barons have signed Houck to an amateur try-out contract. This comes as the last place Vancouver Giants season has ended. Houck joins the Barons in the midst of a heated playoff race where they find themselves two points back of the division lead. Houck will get his chance to impress the Oilers brass and possibly earn himself an entry-level NHL contract. He could get into the lineup as early as this weekend in a third or fourth line support role. Tyler Thomson

March 2015 – Jackson Houck is an averaged size right wing with an extremely strong work ethic in both ends of the rink. His offensive prowess is inconsistent at times but his willingness to get dirty and throw timely hits overshadows his scoring droughts. While Houck’s skating ability could use some improvement, it is clear he possesses the “heart-and-soul” qualities which make an effective and adaptable teammate. In his draft year, Houck lead the last place Vancouver Giants in scoring with 23 goals and 57 points, appearing in all 69 games. Houck followed up his sophomore WHL season with 34 goals and 71 points in 69 games to finish off 2013-2014. He compiled 57 and 61 penalty minutes each season respectively.

In the current WHL season, Houck is a part of another Giants last place team. His point totals and projected rate have regressed from his previous two seasons (currently has 18 goals and 43 points in 52 games). While it is concerning to look at, it is the result of Houck having to be responsible on a lackluster squad. He has carried the assistant captaincy for this year’s campaign and has shown no signs of complacency while helping his team fight for a playoff spot. If Houck can carry over his intense physical play next year and continue to score goals, he will undoubtedly push for a spot on the Oklahoma City Barons. Tyler Thomson

Fantasy Outlook: D-

Houck could make an impact as a grinder if a team takes a flyer on him. He shouldn’t be considered for even the deepest of keeper and dynasty pools.
