Observations:

January 2014 – Nathan MacKinnon has had an impressive rookie season so far. MacKinnon Leads all rookies in points with 26 in 41 games and sits second among rookies in goal with 12, all this while averaging 16:15 of ice time; add a plus- 6 rating to that and he has a real shot at a Calder trophy in the off season. October 2013 – MacKinnon scored his first goal of his NHL career vs. the Washington Capitols on the twelfth, he now has six points in five games and it looks like there is no stopping him. MacKinnon makes sound decisions with and without the puck and seems to find the right areas and make the right corrections every shift. MacKinnon has incredible chemistry right now with his line mates P.A. Parenteau and Jamie McGinn and this is an excellent beginning to a long career in the NHL. Andrew Ward

July 2013 – Nathan MacKinnon has signed a three year entry level contract with the Colorado Avalanche. The first overall draft pick has caused a log jam at center for the Avalanche but a talent of his caliber was too hard to pass up for Colorado. MacKinnon has the strength, speed, and shot the Avalanche so desperately needed and you can expect MacKinnon to compete for the Calder Trophy as an Avalanche regular for the 2013-14 NHL season. Andrew Ward

Draft Day, June 2013 – “With the first overall selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft the Colorado Avalanche select from the Halifax Mooseheads, Nathan McKinnon.” As expected Colorado makes their pick they said they would. He will likely slide into a second or third line role, likely alongside the newly acquired Alex Tanguay. Jason Banks

May 2013 – Nathan MacKinnon had a superb draft season and outstanding finish to (likely) his last season of junior hockey. MacKinnon and draftmate Jonathan Drouin led their Halifax Mooseheads to a QMJHL Championship and followed that with a CHL Memorial Cup Championship. MacKinnon was named the 2013 Memorial Cup MVP and Top Scorer after posting seven goals and 13 points, including a hattrick and an assist in the Championship game versus the Portland Winterhawks. MacKinnon elevated his draft stock during the Memorial Cup with his dominance and ability to raise his game to elite player status. Capping off a 32 goal, 75 point regular season (44 games) performance with an impressive 11 goal, 33 point (17 games) post-season encore certainly has scout’s discussing MacKinnon as a potential first overall selection for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Brendan Ross

December 2012 – Nathan MacKinnon has been named to the 2013 World Junior National Canadian team. Brendan Ross

December 2012 – Drafted first overall in the 2011 QMJHL Entry Draft, MacKinnon skated his way to impressive rookie season finishing second in first year scoring with 31 tallies and 78 points.  Projected to be at top pick in the upcoming 2012 NHL Entry Draft, MacKinnon is a player with an elite game feature explosive acceleration and quickness. He possesses tremendous hockey sense that allows him to read the ice in all areas of the rink. Brendan Ross

Fantasy Outlook: A+

MacKinnon is the top fantasy prospect available in the 2013 draft class as he projects to be an offensive dynamo.
