Mitchell Moroz, LW

Height: 6-2

Weight: 208

Born: 1994-05-03

Hometown: Calgary, AB, Canada

Drafted: 2012 by Edmonton, 32nd overall

Observations:

September 2017- Once considered a top prospect of the Edmonton Oilers, Moroz was not offered a qualifying contract by the Coyotes, who acquired him last February, and became a free agent. He signed a one-year contract with the Idaho Steelheads and will play 2017-18 in the ECHL. If you still have him on your dynasty team farm, it's probably time to cut ties as Moroz's NHL future seems extremely doubtful at this point. Keith Duggan

February 2017- Mitchell Moroz has been dealt to the Arizona Coyotes for Henrik Samuelsson. Moroz, who was picked four slots after Samuelsson in the 2012 draft, has a goal and two assists in 17 games for Bakersfield of the AHL this season. Much like Samuelsson, Moroz was in need of a fresh start, once considered a decent prospect for the Oilers. As of right now this trade seems to hurt Moroz fantasy wise, with him joining a system loaded with several excellent prospects, his chances of playing for the Coyotes seems very low. Keith Duggan

October 2016 – Coming into his third professional season in the Oilers prospect system, Moroz is becoming a prospect that’s on the outside looking in. Moroz is moulded into a Milan Lucic type player, but this past summer saw the Oilers go out and pick up Lucic himself. Coming off of a 10 point season, Moroz will need to produce, as well as become a leader in the AHL this year to stay relevant in the Oilers prospect system. Brayden Sully

September 2015 – Moroz will spend another season fighting (quite literally) for a spot on Bakersfield in the AHL. The scrappy 21-year-old was cut from Oilers camp on September 30th and now faces another year of growing pains as he tries to find his two-way game. It is evident Moroz has the physicality and spirit to force his way onto an NHL roster, but it is looking more and more likely that the Oilers may have drafted him a little too high at 32 overall back in 2012. Moroz led all AHL rookies in penalty minutes last season with 169. Tyler Thomson

May 2015 – Moroz compiled an astounding 169 penalty minutes in 66 games this season, leading all AHL rookies. While it would have been nice to see the scoring touch he showed in his final OHL campaign, there is plenty of room for him to improve as he is in the long-term plans for the Oilers. Coming in at 6’3” and 214 pounds, it’s no secret as to why he appeared in all of the Barons’ games as a rookie. When he eventually cracks the big club, the penalty minutes and hits could be worth a quick pickup. He notched one assist in the Barons three game sweep of San Antonio in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs. Tyler Thomson

February 2015 – After a career year in his final season with the Edmonton Oil Kings in 2013-2014 (63 points in 70 games, four points in five Memorial Cup games), Moroz has had a difficult transition year with Oklahoma City. His first professional season has been lacklustre offensively with only one goal and four points in 40 games. The plus side is he has appeared in almost all of the Barons games and has been a welcome physical presence alongside fellow prospect Travis Ewanyk on the fourth line. Racking up 71 penalty minutes in his first professional season is a sure sign that most of his fantasy value will come in peripheral categories. Moroz is still young and the offence can still develop but with the Oilers stacked on young, highly skilled forwards, it will be difficult for him to break through to more than a third/fourth line player. A long Barons playoff run should help Moroz and the rest of the Oilers hopefuls progress in their development. Tyler Thomson

September 2013 – After missing his first training camp due to the lockout in 2012-13, Mitch Moroz was again forced to miss parts of preseason action due to a knee injury that he was rehabilitating. Moroz, injured in the Edmonton Oil Kings' playoff run, is scheduled to return to the WHL to compete in his "third" full season looking to improve upon the modest 13 goals and career-high 34 points he recorded last year. He remains a long-term project with low-upside in the point production but could offer moderate value in fantasy keeper leagues with penalty minutes. Moroz recorded 140 penalty minutes for the Oil Kings last season in 69 games. Brendan Ross

August 2012 – The Oilers didn’t go far to find their second round pick in the 2012 draft as Mitch Moroz was playing right in their own back yard. Mitch Moroz is a checking forward who burst on to the scene with his power forward style and fearless play. In his rookie WHL season, Moroz scored 16 goals and had 25 points in 66 games. He is a penalty kill warrior blocking a ton of shots and plays a physical game. His offensive ceiling is limited although he will play a bigger role for the Edmonton Oil Kings this year. Zenon Herasymiuk

Fantasy Outlook: C-

Limited offensive value but will put up a solid amount of penalty minutes and hits when he gets there.
