Observations:

July 2016- The Boston Bruins have signed Alex Grant to a one-year, two-way contract. He finished a strong season in 2015-16, racking up 11 goals and 42 points in 69 games with Springfield of the AHL. The AHL veteran also put up 24 power play points last season, finishing the year 10th in American League defenseman scoring. Grant appeared in five scoreless games with the Arizona Coyotes in a depth role. He most likely plays a similar role with the Bruins in 2016-17, spending the majority of the year with Providence and could fill in with the big club if injuries hit. Keith Duggan

November 2015- After attending the Coyotes training camp on an invite, the team signed Alex Grant to a one-year, two-way contract and assigned him to Springfield Falcons of the AHL. The veteran has gotten off to an excellent start to the season with three goals and 14 points in 16 games, good for fifth among defenseman in the AHL. Even though he's putting up excellent numbers, Grant seems to have slipped into that player who is too good for the AHL, but not good enough for the NHL. With a few injuries hitting the Coyotes blueline, Philip Samuelsson was recalled to Arizona over Grant. If Grant gets a legit chance with the Coyotes he could offer some fantasy value but that seems unlikely at this point. Keith Duggan

March 2015 – An AHL veteran, Alex Grant may be having his most productive season yet in this his 6th season and third AHL team.  In 46 games with Binghamton, the rearguard has 28 points (5G, 23A), good for second on the team amongst defensemen behind Chris Wideman.  Grant has a booming shot from the point and his best chance of sticking with an NHL club is as a powerplay specialist.  As a 26-year-old AHL player, Grant’s chances of making an impact on an NHL roster are slim at this point, but if he does get the opportunity monitor his fantasy value by his powerplay time.  He has the offensive ability to be flash in the pan but does not seem to have what it takes to be an NHL player at this point in his career. Kevin LeBlanc

April 2014 – The Ottawa Senators acquired defensemen Alex Grant from the Anaheim Ducks on deadline day for forward Andre Petersson.  Grant is a bit of an AHL journeyman in that he’s played for three different minor league teams in the last two seasons.  However, with all of those teams he has put up solid numbers for an offensive defensemen.  In the 2013-14 regular season, he has scored seven goals and 20 assists in 52 games with Norfolk, then scored twice in as many games with the Anaheim Ducks. Grant now has a pair of goals and seven helpers with Binghamton in 14 games.  He will certainly be on Binghamton’s opening roster next season where he will most likely spend a full season with one team for the first time since his junior days with the Saint John Sea Dogs. Nathan Martin

Fantasy Outlook: C-

Grant is an offensive defensemen with the necessary skills to thrive in that role.  He’s big, makes good first passes and has a great shot that would help any powerplay.  How Grant does under a full season or two with one team will be very telling as to whether or not he will crack an NHL lineup. Learning under former NHL defensemen Luke Richardson will go a long way as well.
