April 2024 – Tychonick had an outstanding rookie season in the ECHL where he was named an ECHL All-Star and a member of the All-Rookie Team. The 24-year-old had six goals and 43 points in 51 games with the now defunct Newfoundland Growlers. Since the Growlers folded, Tychonick has been re-assigned to the Toronto Marlies who now have a logjam of players up-and-down the lineup. Tychonick’s future with the organization will not have a clear path until Toronto sorts out their ECHL affiliate heading into 2024-25. Curtis Rines

March 2023 – Tychonick signed a two-year AHL deal with the Toronto Marlies, leaving the Ottawa system using the NCAA loophole. It isn’t a massive loss for the Senators, as Tychonick’s runway to make an NHL impact is a long one, but it is never nice to lose a player for nothing. Aaron Itovitch

October 2020 – The fact of the matter is that Tychonick has not had the path he or the Senators had hoped for since his draft. He struggled to find room on the University of North Dakota roster and decided to transfer to the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He will not be sitting out a year due to transfer rules. His development has started to stall and he will need to get it back on the road if there is any hope to a prospect with some promise. Tony Ferrari

January 2020 – The sophomore season for Jonny Tychonick hasn’t gone as he had hoped to this point. Despite having nine points in 15 games, he hasn’t been able to stick in the lineup for any sustained period of time with the University of North Dakota. His defensive play may be to blame for the consistent scratches but the production speaks for itself. His offense and transitional play have been good this season as he’s played to his strength when he is in the lineup. Tychonick will have to keep up his solid play, when in the lineup, in the second half of the season if he wants to begin earning regular playing time. Tychonick has a very intriguing skillset but the defensive end of the ice is still a weakness that will need to be shored up. Likely returning to the University of Noth Dakota next season, Tychonick will look to finish this year strong to prove that he’s ready for an expanded role in 2020-21. Tony Ferrari

October 2019 – Tychonick has been scratched in two of four games to start the season with the University of North Dakota. He has played both Friday’s and then sits in the press box on Saturday. This leads you to believe that he is currently in a battle for the final regular spot in the UND lineup and seeing as he plays on the first day, he may have the leg up on the competition. The concern is that he should have earned a regular spot this season, and while that could still be the case, he has struggled a bit in his first couple of games. Tychonick will need to continue to improve and earn a fulltime gig with UND if there is any chance of him making the jump to the pros after the NCAA season. Tony Ferrari

August 2019 – Originally drafted out of the BCHL, Tychonick produced at a near point-per-game pace in the Junior A league. Deciding not to play in the CHL in order to keep his NCAA eligibility, he just finished his freshman season at the University of North Dakota. His production dropped sharply with only four assists in 28 games. He wasn’t relied upon heavily in his freshman season and will continue to grow in his time at North Dakota. He is a very good skater who is able to transition the puck through the neutral zone with his agile skating and edge work or with his excellent passing ability. His instincts once in the offensive zone are still a work in progress at five-on-five but Tychonick has the ability to quarterback a  power play with efficiency. He utilizes his shot to get the puck on net, looking to create a rebound and opportunity for his forwards down low. Defensively, he has inconsistencies with his play against the rush. He skates well but doesn’t utilize it to close gaps and allows incoming attackers too easy a lane often times. When hemmed in the defensive zone, he has the ability to be mobile and rotate through the opposition, staying in position. A step up in production this season is expected for the North Dakota defender. Tony Ferrari
