June 2025 – The Pittsburgh Penguins signed Fernström to a three-year, entry-level contract on June 13, 2025. Fernström split the 2024-25 season with Örebro HK of the Swedish Hockey League, the top professional league in Sweden, and their J20 Nationell team. In 48 games with the SHL team, the 2025 SHL Rookie of the Year had 17 points (eight goals and nine assists), all of which ranked first in SHL rookies. In 12 games with their J20 Nationell team, the 6-1, 185-pound forward produced 18 points (11 goals and seven assists). Fernström will play for Örebro HK during the 2025-26 season but could join the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins when Örebro’s 2025-26 campaign concludes.
Fernström will represent Team Sweden at the 2025 World Junior Showcase, which will also include teams from Canada, Finland, and the United States. The event will take place from July 25 to August 2, 2025, at Ridder Arena on the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis campus. Mark Henry
February 2025 – Fernström was dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Marcus Pettersson trade. He’s bounced between Örebro’s SHL and J20 teams and has been impressive in both. Unquestionably, Fernström has dominated the J20 when he’s played there. In just 12 games, he’s netted 11 goals and 18 points and controls the game. In the SHL, the staggering point totals aren’t there, but Fernström’s shot and offensive potential are still on display. His skating and defensive instincts need improvement, but if those areas are addressed, the Penguins may have a player who could factor into their NHL plans. Nick Orr
July 2024 – Fernström was selected 93rd overall by the Vancouver Canucks. Mark Henry
February 2024 – Fernström’s production has jumped off the page in J20 this season, but the tape leaves us a bit more skeptical. He’s a skilled shooter, making the most of the perimeter scoring chances J20 defenses routinely afford, but his lack of defensive and transition involvement limits his impact at this stage. While the finishing skill, flashes of creativity, and handling skill are enticing, his overall toolkit has yet to take shape, which is why he remains an HM on our rankings. Sebastian High
