Observations

March 2026 – Dans Locmelis has been one of the more intriguing prospects to watch live this season. The 21-year-old spent the entire year with the Providence Bruins, tallying 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points in 43 games, continuing to show why he’s considered a smart, two-way forward with upside in the Boston Bruins system. He also represented Team Latvia at the Olympics, recording two goals in four games and proving he can contribute on the international stage.
Locmelis displays elite vision and playmaking ability, consistently baiting defenders to open passing lanes and create opportunities for teammates. His hockey IQ stands out, and he processes the game quickly, allowing him to make plays under pressure and help drive offensive sequences even without being a shoot-first option. His defensive game is just as reliable. Locmelis is trusted in shutdown situations and on the penalty kill, using strong positioning, awareness, and effort to disrupt plays. His skating also plays a key role in his effectiveness, as he uses deceptive crossovers and lateral agility to maintain speed through transition and stay involved in puck battles despite his lanky frame.
Adding strength will be important for his long-term projection, as he currently sits around 180 pounds and will need more physical mass to handle the NHL game. Unfortunately, his season was cut short after re-aggravating a shoulder injury, which will keep him out for the remainder of the year. Although he has yet to make his NHL debut, his well-rounded game suggests he could carve out a role at the next level. – Kenny Kaminsky

August 2025 – After signing his ELC, the 21 year old Latvian forward joined the Providence Bruins for their playoffs. He posted an assist in four games. His collegiate career ends with 70 games, 15 goals and 32 assists over two NCAA seasons. Locmelis, a fourth round pick in 2022, will suit up for the baby Bruins in the AHL, hoping to hone his game and earn his way onto a retooling Bruins squad that has seen many of his dynasty level veterans move on via retirement or trade in recent seasons. He doesn’t appear to be a future linemate of David Pastrnak, but is more likely a defensively responsible, complimentary contributing third liner if he makes the NHL. He is not on many radars at present, being rostered in less than 20% of Fantrax leagues. April 2025 – The Boston Bruins signed Locmelis to a three-year entry-level contract with an annual NHL cap hit of $860,000. He will report to the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League on an ATO. Mark Henry

April 2023 – Locmelis had a mini coming-out party at the Summer edition of the 2022 World Junior tournament, scoring three goals in six games on a subpar Latvian team. He parlayed this into a successful campaign with his Lulea team in the Swedish Junior League, putting up 25 goals and 34 assists in just 44 games. Locmelis will look to adapt to the North American game next season when he plays his freshman season at the University of Massachusetts. With a looming Boston rebuild and playing hockey in-state for college, Locmelis could be paving the way to crack the Bruins roster in the coming years. Nate Duffett
