Felix Unger Sörum

April 2024 – Unger Sorum’s season came to an end recently after Leksands IF’s loss in the SHL playoffs to Frolunda. It was a busy year for Unger Sorum, who was one of Sweden’s best players during the World Junior Championship and who became a regular in the Leksands lineup at just 18-years-old. Posting four goals and 14 assists for 18 points in 41 games, he flashed the playmaking skill he showed during the preseason with the Carolina Hurricanes as well as his discipline, only taking a singular penalty during the entire season. Unger Sorum was on loan at Leksands and he may have a chance at cracking the Hurricanes opening night roster next year. Nick Bass

January 2024 – For being one of the youngest players at the World Junior Championships, Unger Sorum did not act like it. Adding a goal and five assists for six points in seven games and helping Sweden reach the gold medal game, Unger Sorum played a large role in getting them there, even though Sweden didn’t win the gold. His biggest strength continues to be his skating, which was displayed throughout the tournament. Unger Sorum’s passing was also stellar, including sending a cross-seam pass on the power play that resulted in a goal. Unger Sorum’s ceiling continues to improve, as he is probably closer to being a top-six playmaking winger than a middle-six winger at this moment. Nick Bass

April 2023 – Felix Unger Sörum is one of the most interesting case studies among the Swedes in the 2023 draft class. He has demonstrated two very different but equally effective styles of play at the two levels he’s played at this season. In the SHL, Unger Sörum has demonstrated an impressive degree of defensive awareness, engagement, anticipation, and off-puck support of teammates on both sides of the puck. This is indicative of a very strong fall-back game as a defensive specialist energy winger on a fourth line. The upside, however, is on display when he plays his own age group in the J20. Here, he flashes genuinely impressive playmaking. At even strength on a per-60 basis, he funnels more pucks to the slot than every top-50 player on our board not named Will Smith, who he’s tied with (data via InStat). Now, the J20 is not the strongest league and Unger Sörum is not a top-2 playmaker in the class, but he is a top-15 one in my books.

He lacks much dynamic skill and his handling is the weakest component of his offensive toolkit, but he pairs his playmaking with very intelligent and slot-oriented routes both with and without the puck, and his head is constantly on a swivel searching for open ice and static defenders to exploit. Despite some weaknesses that will need addressing, Unger Sörum plays an intelligent game that will translate seamlessly to the pro level (and already has in a small SHL sample). His September birthday gives him a very long runway, and his playmaking game forms the crux of his upside. His combination of a high-floor two-way game and stand-out playmaking ability makes him a fascinating prospect, who could be a mid-round steal. Sebastian High

April 2023 – Unger Sorum is another Swedish player this year who has performed at a high level in the J-20 (46 points and 10 goals in 42 games) and earned a look at the SHL level. Unger Sorum was able to demonstrate his versatile game at the pro level, showing his smarts, his ability to find the slot, and his tenacity. Against J20 competition, his playmaking shone very brightly and could unlock a higher offensive ceiling in his game.
