Prospect Ramblings – Camp Cuts – September 20 2018

Welcome to Thursday’s ramblings; let us see what players have been cut of note for poolies!

If a team is not mentioned it is because they did not list the cuts when I was making this.

Arizona

Tyler Steenbergen

Chalk me up as a person who was surprised Steenbergen did not get a longer look with the big club considering his last two WHL seasons. Now I did not expect him to make the NHL squad, I still feel he has flaws in the way he plays the game, but I thought his skill would have kept him around longer.

Kevin Ekman-Larsson

With only 25 games in the AHL last season I would have expected the Coyotes to have given the younger OEL (aka KEL) a few extra days, but perhaps they want him to learn the system in the AHL first with the depth they currently have on defence.

Chicago

No one of note, but with the injuries to Jan Ruuta and Connor Murphy expect Henri Jokiharju and Carl Dahlstrom to have a good chance to make this team. Out of the two expect Dahlstrom to have a greater chance to stay on the team considering he is older (more experienced) and that is how Quenville likes his defensemen.

Brandon Davidson is of course just on a PTO but those injuries should open the door to him getting a roster spot as he is a fine defenseman who can play on the third pairing in the NHL.

Also whatever you do, do not forget this name on draft day: Erik Gustavsson

Colorado

No one of note but Martin Kaut is impressing and there are whispers he could potentially make the team, so keep a watch on there… OR follow my twitter account below and when I know you will know

Dallas

Ty Dellandrea is headed back to Flint in the OHL after he signed his entry-level deal, which is surprising as I would have expected the Stars to sign him, showcase him for another game, and then return him to junior. Just interesting timing is all as it is pretty early in training camp.

Sending Jason Robertson back to Kingston this early was interesting considering it will be his final year in the OHL and the more experience with veterans the better for him. Should be no problem between the team and the player but it is just noteworthy.

Detroit

Jared McIsaac is going back to the QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads pretty early in training camp considering how awful Detroit’s defense is set up.

Edmonton

Stuart Skinner is heading to Bakersfield in the AHL, but this one makes sense as the Oilers have a few goalies currently in camp and sending Skinner to the AHL this early lets him get accustomed to the teams system and players early, considering he could be the starter this season.

Florida

Serron Noel has been returned to the Oshawa Generals, which does make sense as how many second round picks make NHL teams. Also with how stacked the Panthers are this season there is no chance he could make the team.

LA

Akil Thomas is going back to Niagara early as the Kings sent him back to the OHL, and that to me is a little concerning considering how he fell in the draft. He is still quite skilled but now I want to track him more to see why he fell and was sent back so quickly.

New York Rangers

Sean Day is headed to Hartford, the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, early in training camp. There is no questioning his skating skill, but considering how much he has been dumped on in the world of the internet I would have thought the Rangers would have kept him in training camp longer to get older players to work with him. I still hope he can become an NHLer but he has a large hill to climb.

Ottawa

Considering they expect to have 10 rookies make the roster I don’t expect cuts for a while

Philadelphia

Morgan Frost was easily one of the best players in the OHL last season and he gets sent back this early in training camp? That is ludicrous to me. I know there is no room on the Flyers but this is too early, and now he will just go to the OHL and destroy it, and possibly make the Junior squad and take that over as well.

Washington

Alexander Alexeyev was returned to Red Deer quite early as the Capitals have a ton of defensive depth and he is not needed to be focused on in games. If there is one thing you can say about the Capitals prospect depth, it is that they have good defensemen in the pipeline who will be relied upon in Hershey and need extra time at a higher pace.

Teams with no prospects of note that were sent down:

Boston

Carolina

Columbus

Minnesota

Nashville

New Jersey

Tampa

Toronto
