July 2018 – It was definitely an adjustment year for David Bernhardt, as his offensive production took a dip this past season. Not a total surprise, as it was his first full season playing for Djurgardens of the SHL. He figures to cut more and measure less with his play in the coming season now that he has a better understanding of what to expect. Edric Joseph

October 2016 – With their final pick in the 2016 entry draft, the Flyers went with David Bernhardt, a Swedish-born defenseman coming off a strong year with the Djurgardens IF J20 team. Bernhardt tallied 38 points in 40 games, while adding another six points in a short-lived playoff run. The two-way defenseman is a strong skater with good transporting abilities, and though he was a late-round pick, his odds of cracking the NHL down the road aren’t too bad. His ability to think the game at such a high level allows him to be effective in all three zones, and his consistent play bodes well for his future.

It’s difficult to project where he may fit in statistically at the NHL level, however given that he’s already seen SHL action early this season, that bodes well for his NHL future. If Bernhardt reaches his ceiling, he could be a 25- to 35-point NHL defenseman, however he’s still a ways away from seeing NHL time. Brennen York
