Observations:
November 2017 – With some of the struggles of Oleksiak and Julius Honka, Pateryn has found himself in the lineup the last several games. He’s strictly a depth player on the third defensive pairing. Pateryn is up to over 100 games in the NHL now at 27 years of age, so his developmental phase is likely over. In Montreal he was at least offering fantasy owners some PIM, but that doesn’t seem to be a case in Dallas. There is some production in the secondary stats like hits and blacked shots, but Honka could get called up any day and take away his minutes again. –Matt Kowalski
September 2017 – Dallas acquired Pateryn from Montreal in the Jordie Benn trade. Peter Harling
December 2015 – Pateryn has solidified a spot on the Canadiens roster and is officially an NHLer. Making the team out of training camp but sitting in the press box every night, Pateryn finally got his chance when Alexei Emelin was injured and missed a few games. Pateryn drew back in again on Dec. 10 versus Detroit (Beaulieu – scratch) and more or less cost the team the game with a terrible giveaway in front of the net that led to a Darren Helm goal during third period action. The good news for Pateryn is that Jarred Tinordi has yet to play a game, so while Beaulieu will probably be re-inserted, Pateryn seems entrenched as the number seven. Mike Barrett
March 2015 – Pateryn remains up with the Canadiens and has been inserted in the lineup regularly despite a surplus of veteran defensemen. His value is probably limited to deeper multi-category leagues if he does stick but the fact that the coach keeps turning to Pateryn makes this situation a lot more interesting. Eric Daoust
March 2015 – Despite a significant drop in offensive production this year, Pateryn earned a call-up to the Canadiens as an injury replacement. In six contests, he played well in his limited role and helped the Habs maintain their winning record in their chase for the first seed in the Eastern Conference. With that said, even with the strong play Pateryn turns 25 this summer. Barring a magical late-blooming surge to full-time NHL duty, it looks like Pateryn will be limited to injury call-up status moving forward. Eric Daoust
December 2014 – Pateryn has taken a step back offensively this year with just nine points through 30 contests. With tons of competition in the system for a promotion to the Candiens' main roster, this development is a major blow to Pateryn after showing a lot of promise at both ends of the ice in recent years. Eric Daoust
October 2014 – Pateryn was a late cut from camp as the Canadiens opted to keep former first-round picks Jarred Tinordi and Nathan Beaulieu on the main roster. While Pateryn will be the first defenseman called up to fill in for an injury, a change of scenery may be needed for him to get a real opportunity in the NHL. Eric Daoust
May 2014 – Pateryn signed a two-year extension with the Canadiens. Both years are two-way which makes it more justifiable to keep him down in the minors as he will have a lower salary down there. With Nathan Beaulieu and Jarred Tinordi almost ready for a promotion plus other talented blueliners slowly developing it is difficult to forecast when Pateryn will ever get a chance in Montreal outside of being an injury replacement. His best bet is to have another strong training camp in the fall and try to force the team's hand. Eric Daoust
April 2014 – Largely an unknown and unexpected prospect in the Canadiens system, he has upside of being a difference-making, well-rounded minute eater in the very near future. In just a pair of seasons he has eclipsed his production in his NCAA career and has become a leader with a letter in the Hamilton Bulldogs locker room. Last season he had a small cup of coffee with the big club while injuries crippled the team. The only subject holding him out of the lineup was political in that his name is not Tinordi or Beaulieu, an issue he may continue to deal with as he attempts to climb the depth chart. Montreal only has a pair or regulars signed for next season (Gorges & Emelin) with Subban due for a substancial pay raise as an RFA, the Canadiens may opt for a couple cheap prospects to plug in with what could be over 15 million tied up amongst just three defenders. This could be an excellent opportunity for the ‘Habs’ to utilize a low risk character option like Pateryn with one of the prospect jewels. Jason Banks
Fantasy Outlook: D+
A secure, all-around defenseman with modest production that will feed off organizational weapons.
