Analysis of the deals:

Ottawa adds a rather large defenseman to their depth in Binghamton in Alex Grant. He has performed strongly this season and has some NHL potential at the age of 25. He has also shown some reasonable offensive prowess with about half a point per game in his last trio of professional seasons, including two goals in a pair of games for Anaheim this season.

Bryan Murray spoke before the deadline that the Sens had some prospect forward depth to use to acquire what they needed, and decided to deal their smallish, scoring Swede Andre Petersson. Anaheim was more than welcome to add some more offensive depth for their roster. Petersson will have to compete with some strong talent around him so he kind of moved sideways in terms of opportunity.

Detroit had a ton of valued prospects to deal and might have moved the most optimal one for the organization. Calle Jarnkrok is a productive, responsible forward that has shown very good transition to North America. He is the type of player Nashville greatly values and thus he will be given all the opportunities that they can. Bob MacKenzie has stated there is speculation that he could go back to Sweden after the season.

Collberg is having a tough season with limited production in the Swedish Elite league, but he has a talent level that makes him very attractive should he develop properly. His speed is an asset and could bring a new dimension to Brooklyn within a couple years. Depending on your outlook, he may have gone to a more attractive place to play as with Montreal, he would have been another undersized player on an undersized team. His wing versatility is nice to have too especially with the centers in the organization.

Colorado purchased ‘Berra insurance’ for J.S. Gigure. Reto Berra will likely be assigned to the AHL as I believe he does not have to clear waivers as he was already assigned to AHL this season without them. Even if he isn’t, he will help provide piece of mind for Colorado as Varlamov has a history of being a band-aid boy and Giggy has chronic back issues. Berra also gives competition to Sami Attiokallio for backup next season. Berra’s starts will likely suffer, but when he does, they should be more quality ones.

Calgary will now role with Joni Ortio, whose value vaults upwards and Joey MacDonald until Karri Ramo returns from injury. Ortio becomes a very interesting play, while Jon Gillies now has space to easily slide into pro going forward. I feel the Flames moved the right goalie in the situation.

*

Carolina acquires stymied Russian center Andrei Loktionov who will now slot in as a #3 center man over Riley Nash. Loktionov has much more offensive upside than he displayed in New Jersey this season, but I wouldn’t say his surroundings improved in Carolina, but they do a decent job giving guys who have fallen out of favor opportunities. If you’re near the bottom of a deep keeper league, he might be a good buy low candidate until you find something better.

Matt Frattin just can’t seem to find a place to find a home. He has shown great promise, but he underachieved in Toronto bouncing up and down, and was a bust in LA. At 26-years-old he is now a reclamation process for Columbus. Might this be Frattin’s last chance to jump into a top 6 role but he won’t just get thrown into the role, he will have to compete for more than 13 minutes a night.

With Buffalo having a strong supply of prospect defenseman, they felt an ability to deal Brayden McNabb out and pull in a large talented winger in Hudson Fasching who is still a few years away unless he leaves NCAA early and third year pro Nicolas Deslauriers who has shown large growth this season.

LA pulling in McNabb is more about depth for a playoff run and an opportunity in 2014-15, not this season. McNabb will compete with Derek Forbort next season for the final spots on the NHL roster after Willie Mitchell and Matt Greene are not resigned. Personally I like Forbort more than McNabb, the latter is an RFA going into this offseason. His only advantage over Forbort maybe that he could sign for cheaper than Forbort’s $863,000 and gain a spot that way although LA has most of their key players locked up with friendly contracts, they don’t seem like they will have cap issues next season. May the better man win!

Chris Brown gets a new life in an organization that is not as prospect heavy as Phoenix. Brown has already seen limited NHL games and makes a better recall for Washington than Casey Wellman, Michael Latta or Nic Deschamps.

Is this the final shot for David Rundblad? He has never shown any glimpses of his potential in the NHL compiling only nine points in 50 NHL games while being a healthy scratch more often than not frustrating his fantasy owners. Both Phoenix and Ottawa had better ice time opportunities for him while there, but he couldn’t show any signs of life, Chicago is his best chance to be productive but in limited minutes and likely as a specialist. He is still at best a depth move for the Blackhawks after they waived Mike Kostka who wasn’t playing poorly in that role. Rundblad has the tools to become that lucrative defenceman we expected, but I’m not betting on this horse anymore. Another Dobber writer, Steve Laidlaw writes his opinion here.

Chicago seems to be seeking offence from the backend to go with all their studs at the top of the order. Mathieu Brisbois posted 145 points 245 PIMs in his final 150 games in junior for Rouyn-Noranda of the QMJHL. He is not translating it yet to the AHL with only 4 points in 28 games but there is a ton of room and time to grow for him. Chicago is looking 2-4 years ahead with Brisebois who will continue to slide under the radar in Rockford for a year or two behind Adam Clendening, Klas Dahlbeck and veteran Brian Connelly. Check for growth on him in two years when he might be worth a flyer.

The biggest deal of the day features the ‘best goalie outside the NHL’ in Jacob Markstrom, yet he is overshadowed by the Roberto Luongo saga by most media… but you’re at DobberProspects.com!!! We won’t overlook him. Provided the Canucks do not add another goalie in the next few hours, Markstrom owners have a goalie for their fantasy playoffs who has the potential to post decent stats. If you have been waiting on him, this will be much appreciated. Eddie Lack currently looks like he controls the crease, but you don’t trade a superstar like Roberto Luongo for a goalie you plan on using as a backup, Markstrom will likely see part of a 1A/B split this season, with potential to take the ball and run with it. As good as Lack has looked it is a small sample size and he has yet to put a death grip on the spot by any means. I have two concerns with this deal: Does Markstrom respond positively to a new home after being thrown away by a team that had built him up like he was going to be the Rock of their franchise? What does this mean long term, Vancouver is a better team now but is retooling, Florida had an extremely bright future if they grow properly. Personally I liked Markstrom’s potential more with the Panther’s surrnounding cast, then now in Vancouver’s competitive turmoil.

Florida now has opened space to grow and develop Michael Houser who is several years away, Sam Brittain and Evan Cowley who are serving time in the NCAA. Florida also has little know prospect who is capable of playing in the NHL soon Sergei Gaiduchenko, who is a 6’5, 24-year-old, Russian goalie, who has played 100 KHL games. Gaiduchenko did come over for prospect camp last season which surprised me, as I felt he was not going to cross to Florida, especially with Markstrom on the scene. He has fallen off the map recently after being released by a team then signed but not utilized by another. His future KHL career is now questionable, and the time might be right to attempt North America.

Steven Anthony is un-noteworthy. Seventh round pick who is on his last season of an entry level deal who has yet to play an AHL game. Most likely will not be tendered a contract this summer.

*

Matt Mangene was given a flyer, by the Flyers after a solid NCAA season. He hasn’t really grown or shown anything. Like Anthony he is in the final year of ELC and unlikely to be given another NHL contract, but may get a minor pro one.

*

Pat Mullen was a nice, cheap, little addition to Ottawa’s division leading farm squad in Binghamton. In turn, it will open up more ice in Utica for Frankie Corrado and others to take on more responsibility while the team flounders at the bottom of the AHL. Mullen is 27 years old and is not a real NHL prospect.

The other side of that trade featured Jeff Costello who was a fifth round pick in 2009 and is yet to get signed and leave NCAA. He showed upside last season with 30 points in 33 games for Notre Dame while winning a championship, but has fallen back to 19 points in 34 games but is captain of the team. He is likely to remain un-notable and I don’t see him being signed to anything more than a pro tryout for Utica when he leaves college. Basically Vancouver opened up another contract spot for their potential return on Ryan Kesler.

*

Brandon Pirri was a great addition by Florida, Dobber analyzed it here. His prospect status is pretty much an, Arrived!

*

Mark Mancari is simply a pickup for the San Antonio Rampage to help develop prospects and push for playoffs. Florida hopes that guys like John MacFarland, Quinton Howden, Vincent Trocheck, Logan Shaw, Garrett Wilson and maybe Rocco Grimaldi (if he leaves NCAA this year) soak up all they can from a veteran of 632 AHL games who plays the game properly.

In exchange for Mancari, the Blues opened some room for guys like Ty Rattie, Sergei Andronov & Sebastian Wannstrom to take on more offensive roles and while the addition of Eric Selleck add some toughness to the lineup with a lower line forward to work with Cody Beach. Selleck has actually seen the NHL for a pair of games and had a point.

*

William Carrier is a sizable LW for Buffalo who has some upside from the 2013 second round. He is still 19 until December so he should maintain junior status for fall. If Drummondville gets eliminated early from the QMJHL playoffs, he will likely spend some time with Rochester of the AHL to see how close he is. Carrier could eventually turn into a power forward for fantasy managers to own but right now, in Buffalo, it’s too early to tell, monitor his growth as it has the potential to move very quickly in the organization.
