Observations:

September 2017 – After petering out in Pittsburgh’s system, and signing with the ECHL’s Reading Royals, Segalla signed a professional tryout contract with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers. His pro career hangs by a thread. Mark Allan

June 2017 – In his first pro season, the unheralded fourth-rounder played one AHL game and spent 62 others with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers, totaling three goals, eight assists and 65 PIMs. He’s got a long, bumpy road ahead if he hopes to rise to the NHL. Mark Allan

February 2017 – Players have been known to claw their way up to the NHL from the ECHL but it's a hard climb, and Segalla is off to a slow start in his first pro season. After 45 games with the Wheeling Nailers, the former U of Connecticut D-Man had three goals and seven assists with a minus-5 rating. His one notable stat was 51 PIMs, which didn't get him anywhere near the top 25 in the rugged league. Mark Allan

October 2016 – Segalla signed an AHL contract with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, then was loaned to the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. Mark Allan

September 2016 – Segalla was unsuprisingly demoted to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL as Pittsburgh made its second round of cuts. He subsequently signed an AHL contract with WBS, then was loaned to the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. Mark Allan

June 2016 – The hard-hitting blueliner took a step back while demonstrating the mean streak for which he is known. Playing in just 21 games for the University of Connecticut (down 10 from his sophomore season), the hardrock New Englander posted only five points for the Huskies. Finesse is not his style, as indicated by a one-game suspension for a spearing incident. If he makes it to the NHL, it will for his physical play, although he will have to maximize his muscle to successfully tangle with the big boys in the pros. Mark Allan

January 2016 – If Segalla has any offensive upside, he still isn't showing it yet at the U of Connecticut. Being minus-8 in eight games is not encouraging either. Mark Allan

February 2015 – The Penguins will have to wait for this mobile, mean, hard-hitting blueliner – if he ever develops enough to make the NHL. Although his physical style is more suited to junior play, he’s in his sophomore campaign at the University of Connecticut. Undersized by the current standard of rugged NHL defensemen, the Boston native has two goals, two assists, 48 PIMs and a discouraging minus-11 rating in 28 games, although that might be due to poor team play. The Huskies are 10th in the Hockey East standings with a 6-11-4 record. Mark Allan

July, 2013 – Ryan Segalla is a big, mean, and mobile defenseman. He most recently played for Salisbury Prep in the USHS, where he tallied ten goals and eight assists in 28 games. Segalla has committed to the University of Connecticut; this is the best choice for him as he still has a lot of rawness to his game, mainly his positional play.

 

Fantasy Outlook: D

Segalla projects as a bottom-four physical defenseman, but not in the NHL.
