Observations:

September 2017 – I don't think anyone expected Brandon Carlo to arrive as early as he did but the young defender managed to play all 82 games last season before going down with a season ending concussion. Carlo missed the entire playoffs, but has returned to hockey activities a bit earlier than the rest of the squad in hopes of being a step ahead coming into training camp. Carlo had a monster season, all things considered, and finished with 16 points and a +9 rating playing alongside veteran Zdeno Chara. Carlo has great size and great poise, but will likely never light up the score-sheet. Look for Carlo to see a lot of ice-time again this year but remain more valuable to the Bruins than to fantasy owners. Mike Drover

October 2016 – Carlo is seeing top pairing minutes playing alongside Zdeno Chara in Boston. Carlo has looked great in three games with two points to go along with a plus seven rating in over 20 minutes TOI on average. Mike Drover

October 2016 – Brandon Carlo saw 20:47 average TOI over four exhibition games this fall with the Bruins. The hulking defender has NHL size and strength, and made the Bruins' lineup for starting day. Ideally, the Bruins would like to see Carlo throw around his 6-5 frame more effectively. Carlo registered just two hits in four games this pre-season. With this said, Carlo did have a very good camp. The departure of Christian Ehrhoff, released from aPTO, was a good omen for Carlo. He lined up with Zdeno Chara in his last pre-season game and didn't look at all out of place. Mike Drover

December 2015 – Carlo will be with USA's WJC team for the second straight year. The hulking lueliner will play with Zachary Werenski on the number one defensive unit for the Americans. Though he likely won't score a ton of points, Carlo has the ability to control games with his size and defensive play. It will be interesting to see how he performs against such formidable opponents as Canada and Sweden. Michael Boeckler

June 2015 – The Bruins take Carlo 37th, on the heels of moving another huge rearguard in Dougie Hamilton – and with an aging Zdeno Chara at the tail end of a great career. With good progress, Carlo could be on the B's as early as two years from now. Dobber

March 2015 – Carlo had a bit of a coming-out-party at the WJC logging big minutes on USA’s young blueline. With admirable pro-size on his size, Carlo knows exactly how to manipulate his size in defensive situations using his length and strength to contain opposing attackers. Opportunities to draft 6-foot-5 defensive defensemen with good mobility do not come around often so Carlo should be an attractive prospect as the June draft rolls around. He blends suffocating defensive skills with hard-nosed physicality and, as a bonus, his offensive tools are starting to emerge too. For a ‘big man’ he is a very good skater who maneuvers about the ice with ease. With NHL teams covering sizeable defensemen it’s a sure bet that Carlo gets snatched up inside the first round and with him flashing an ability to jump into the rush and unleash his booming shot recently, there’s some untapped potential here. Tri-City American’s Alternate Captain has three goals, 23 points through 52 WHL games and has racked up 70 penalty minutes. Brendan Ross

Fantasy Outlook: B-

At worst, Carlo develops into a physical minute-munching shutdown defenseman but his mobility, shot and improving puck moving skills suggest he may be one of the next best two-way defensemen coming up through the ranks.
