June 2017 – Even though Friberg signed with Frolunda of the SHL in Sweden, the Habs nonetheless tendered him a qualifying offer in order to maintain his rights. So they see enough in him that he’s worth keeping for the future. Dobber

January 2016 – Max Friberg has been traded to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for goaltender Dustin Tokarski (Jan. 7). The 23-year-old Swede will bring his passion to St-John’s where he should be heavily relied upon to contribute at both ends of the ice. Gulls coach Dallas Eakins could not say enough good things about the former WJC star, stating that his attitude and desire for success were second to none and he was always someone you can count on, especially in the shot blocking department. Friberg is a nice fit with the Habs organization, as his style of play and personality mesh well with what they do in Montreal. Not only does this bolster the Ice Caps, it may allow GM Marc Bergevin to move another young forward out, then opening the door for Friberg to get his first shot with the big club. Another injury to the Habs lineup could also provide that opportunity. Mike Barrett

December 2015- Since his return to San Diego on November 14, Friberg has one goal and six assists in the nine contests he has appeared in.  It’s good to see him get back on the score sheet after failing to register a point in his short stint with Anaheim (5 games).  Friberg is in his third full season in the Ducks organization, he should remain near the top of their list of potential call-ups if injuries or lack of production provide the opportunity for a reassignment. Bryan Puffer

November 2015 – After leading the 2014-15 Norfolk AHL team in scoring, Friberg is off to a decent start with new affiliate San Diego. Good enough for a call-up by the Ducks. Friberg has seen minimal ice time in four games with Anaheim. But given the team’s lack of productive depth on the wing, he stands a small chance of winning a top six role at some point. February 2014 – Max Friberg has had a smooth adjustment to the North American ice, with 11 goals and 12 assists in 43 games. Among his 11 goals, three of them have been shorthanded tallies. He’s seen a lot of time in the top-six, as well as plenty of powerplay time. He has had small stretches of inconsistency, but nothing out of the ordinary for a first year professional. Kevin Won

September 2013 – Friberg was among the first cuts in the Ducks’ training camp, which was much expected since his journey in North America has just begun. The skilled forward will battle for a top-six spot on the Admirals this season. Kevin Won

April 2013 – Max Friberg spent the season in the SEL (Timra), posting eight goals and eight assists in 55 games. The hard-working forward received an average of 14 minutes-per-game and took on a larger role this season seeing time on the powerplay as well. Four of his eight goals this season with Timra were on the powerplay. Friberg is able to find space in high quality shooting areas and has a nose for the net. After getting eliminated from the playoffs (six points in 10 games), he reported to the Norfolk Admirals on April 10th. He will need to spend some time adjusting to the North American game, and it is still unknown whether he will return to the Admirals for next season (2013-14). July 2012 – Anaheim has recently signed Friberg to a three year entry level. He is still likely to play in Europe and become a better player by playing against men in a larger role in Sweden. Jason Banks

April 2012 – Coming from Sweden’s third highest tier, the Swedish Division 1, made Max Friberg a tough prospect to assess going into his draft year. Along with posting over a point-per-game pace for Division 1’s Skovde IK in 34 games, he had good showings as part of Sweden’s Under-19 and Under-20 teams in 2010-2011. However, since he came up through a seldom-explored area of Sweden’s hockey system for NHL scouts, Friberg fell to the Ducks in the fifth round. Friberg is a very fast skater and is a team-oriented hard worker; willing to forecheck and do the grittier aspects of the game. He is not limited to just having upside as an under-sized speedy grinder. He has above average awareness offensively as well as great awareness in the energy forward areas of focus. He jumped right on to Timra’s Elitserien roster in 2011-2012 and posted 10 points in 48 games at his country’s top level. Friberg’s low numbers are not surprising given that most teenagers in Sweden’s Eliserien do not have big offensive roles. The highlight of the year for Friberg was his 11-point showing in six games for Sweden in the WJC U20. He will almost certainly be back in the Elitserien next season and could be there another two to three years. Depending on how he does in Sweden, he could end up being a great third line scoring option that can spot start on scoring lines when he is hot offensively. Yas Guthe
