Observations:
March 2013 – Atkinson made the team out of camp as a first liner, and was clearly the most talented offensive forward on the team. However, a high-ankle sprain derailed his progress and took him out of the lineup for a month. He returned a little too early and has been playing through soreness that has impacted how he moves. His numbers, as a result, have been decent but unspectacular. Still a top prospect, but it may be 2013-14 before we see it, provided he stays healthy. That makes him a great sleeper. – Dobber

November, 2012 – Atkinson is off to a good start to the season with Springfield in the AHL, notching four goals and eight assists in the Falcons first dozen games. Atkinson will be a top-six forward and see power-play time when the Blue Jackets resume play. Rich Dillon
February 2012 – Atkinson only stayed at Boston College for three years while putting up strong numbers in his sophomore and junior years. Now in his first professional season with Blue Jackets’ organization, he is again finding the scoring touch in the AHL with Springfield. Looks to be possibly a top-six forward in near future with overall strong game, but size will be the challenge in NHL. For the most part, he has impressed every chance that he has been given, which bodes well for his odds of making it. – Russ Bitely
Atkinson plays an all-around effective game that shows offensive scoring and defensive grittiness. With the right linemates, he could really surprise.
