Observations:

March 2014 – McElhinney is currently the back-up goalie for the Columbus Blue Jackets, behind Sergei Bobrovsky. He has appeared in 23 games and started 18. McElhinney’s current record in 8-9-1 with two shutouts. Although not playing at the level he would like, the two shutouts certainly point towards his competence in net. He’s on a one-year contract that expires at the end of this season. Chris Bagwell

November 2012 – Fresh off of winning Goaltender of the Month honors in the American Hockey League, McElhinney is off to a great start to once again create an NHL opportunity for himself. At 29-years -old, he is a mature prospect that has bounced around in low-end backup and third string roles on for franchises, now an insurance case for Columbus. McElhinney has actually seen more starts than expected as Allen York has been out with a lower body injury, with York returning soon, expect Curtis to see less starts but his numbers should remain strong. He is a big goalie that takes away many sightlines of the net but his movement is very suspect and reminds me much like former journeyman, Rick Tabaracci. Should the NHL resume soon, he will remain at Springfield incase Steve Mason or Sergei Bobrovsky are hurt or faulter. Jason Banks

Fantasy Outlook:  C-

With Bobrovsky playing solid between the pipes and Mike McKenna and Jeremy Smith climbing the ranks in Springfield, McElhinney’s fantasy outlook isn’t very bright. If you’re in need of a few goalie games each year, he’ll suffice. It’ll be interesting to see if the Jackets re-sign him at the end of the year or let one of the prospects get their feet wet in the NHL.
