Andreas Johnsson

November 2018 – To no one’s surprise, Johnsson has been promoted to the NHL following his breakout AHL campaign. He has been a healthy scratch on occasion, but he has picked up his game and settled into a full-time spot on the wing, mainly on the 3rd line where he sees just under 12 minutes TOI per night. His 9 points in 22 games so far is a fair pace for his ice time, but has the potential to skyrocket if he sees top-six opportunities. Hayden Soboleski

June 2018 – Johnson was dominant in the AHL playoffs helping the Marlies win the Calder Cup. Johnson was late arriving to the Calder Cup playoffs as he was with the Leafs to end the season. The Marlies benefited from the leafs going out in the first round of this year’s playoffs. With the Leafs, Johnson played limited minutes on the fourth line. Johnson had two goals and one assist in nine games. In the playoffs Johnson added another goal and an assist in six games. He then joined the Marlies and never looked back. He went on to win the most valuable player in the Calder Cup playoffs with 10 goals and 14 assists in 16 games. This goes nicely with his 26 goals and 28 assists for 54 points in 54 games. Clearly Andreas Johnson will be a solid contender to join the Leafs full time next season. Brian Harling

March 2018 – Johnsson was steadily improving this year with the Marlies. He started slowly but by the time the Leafs called him up he was the leading scorer with the Marlies, generating a point per game. In 54 games this year Johnsson had 26 goals and 28 assists for 54 points. Since his call up to play with the Leafs, Johnson has got ice time primarily on the 4th line. In six games he has scored just once, but played well. His speed was very evident as he produced multiple scoring opportunities. Babcock uses Johnsson in all situations and is not concerned with his solid defensive game. It has been made very clear that Johnsson is an NHL player but with the numbers what they are Johnsson might get send back to the Marlies. However, Johnsson has made it clear he will be contending for one of those top nine positions next season. Brian Harling

December 2017 – Johnson has established himself as a solid goal scorer this year with the Marlies in his second full year with the Marlies. This season has Johnson firmly anchored on the Marlies top line & he is their top power play performer with four power play goals. Johnson has nine goals and nine assists in 21 games so far this year. Johnson had been a dynamic scorer in the SHL that I had been following very close but when he first arrived in North America for the Marlies he was a bit of a disappointment starting very slowly then suffered a major concussion early in this stint with the Marlies in the 2015/16 playoffs. His first season in the AHL was at best a moderate success but he has fully recovered and has made the adjustment to the North American game. This year he is a dominate player steadily getting better. Johnson is a solid marksman with a great quick release in the William Nylander fashion and will be a solid contender to crack the Leafs next season perhaps as a replacement for JVR. Johnson is a 7th round pick from the 2013 draft that is turning into a very solid late round pick. In fact Johnson has developed into the best player Leafs drafted that year. Brian Harling

March 2016 – Armed with an entry level deal, Johnson was returned to the Swedish Elite League where he finished in a tie for 5^th place on the top scorers list on the back of teammate Ryan Lasch. In Frolunda he posted 44 points in 52 games while playing with a quartet of former Leafs’ prospects. He has shown durability and survivability so far in European Pro, but now must show it in North America for his next step. Likely to be found in the AHL in the upcoming season helping to match this seasons Marlies’ offensive threat and he becomes a very interesting prospect to stash following that expected assignment. February 2015 – The offensive growth chart is starting to reach a peak with Johnson in Sweden as he can be found amongst Frolunda’s top producers. He is playing amongst perennial producers in Mathias Olimb, Mattias Janmark and climbing late bloomers, Robin Figren and Max Gortz, with Johnson being the youngest of the group. He has compiled 32 points in 52 games, which is rather strong in the Swedish league, 20 of those being goals where he ranks 6ths in the entire league and is with 2 of 2^nd place. He may well come over to North America after the European season to see how he survives in the AHL and is a candidate to be fulltime for the Marlies next season, but one more European season will not hurt his development as he fully rounds out his game.  Jason Banks

March 2014 – Since recently signed a contract for two more years in Sweden with his Frolunda franchise, he will continue his development over across the pond. He will need to continue growing his offensive ability and his strength to with stand bigger, more physical, North American opponents in the future. Jason Banks

November 2013 – Johnson is an excellent final round reach by the Leafs scouting staff. He has everything you want in a player, speed, creativity, hands and gets in the middle of action should the game dictate. Like most European players, he has started his pro career early with Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League, and is playing a leading role as he teams top goal scorer and second in points. He will be representing Sweden in the World Juniors and will fill a scoring role with a trio from his pro team alongside him. Johnson already scored vs Canada in a preliminary game, and will look to continue the momentum. His timeline in coming to North America is rather murky at the moment, but at the current time, playing amongst pros is always good for development, especially while having his type of success.
