Quinn Hutson

September 2026 – Hutson backed up his breakout NCAA campaign with one of the stronger first AHL seasons from an undrafted forward in recent memory, posting 63 points in 67 games with Bakersfield – 30 goals and 33 assists that add genuine credibility to his NHL case. He appeared in four games with Edmonton and scored once. The family pedigree runs deep with brothers Cole and Lane establishing themselves as dynamic NHL talents, but Quinn’s profile is meaningfully different – he lacks the separation speed that makes his siblings so dangerous in transition, and his game relies more on scoring instincts than the elite playmaking ability that defines the other Hutsons. The inability to win puck battles or absorb contact limits what roles are available to him at the next level.

In Edmonton, those limitations matter. The role available to Quinn on a contending Oilers team is a sheltered scoring spot, and Mike Babcock is not a coach historically patient with players who require protection to be effective. A specific injury scenario would likely be required to unlock sustained NHL time this year. Ryan Downey

August 2025 – The older brother of Lane and Cole signed with Edmonton and joined them for two games after he broke out in his final NCAA season. his 23 goals and 27 assists for 50 points in 38 games are impressive on their own, and given the headlines a member of his bloodline is making, Quinn Hutson will be a name you likely see in your drafts this year.

Proceed with caution. Hutson went undrafted, and has seen modest growth over his NCAA career (15/13/28 in 3- games in 2022-2023, 18/18/36 in 40 in 2023-2024, 23/27/50 in 38 last season), but a breakout year in his age 22 season could be a misnomer.

Perhaps Quinn has unlocked the offensive potential that his brothers’ have shown earlier in their career, as his 1.38 points per game puts him 69th in that metric in the NCAA since 2009, but the only players of note to make the NHL who have bested this mark at 22 or older are Zach Hyman and Zach Aston-Reese.

Could Huston be the next Zach Hyman, or will he be like the 23 other players ahead of him in offensive output as over-agers whose names we wouldn’t consider in fantasy? Time will tell, he could be a late bloomer, and he could be a great late stash, but don’t overpay, and don’t draft him too early. If you do take him and someone comes knocking, you might be wise to let someone else overpay and take the risk.

He will likely spend time at Bakersfield this season, and we can see which fork in the road his progression will take. Alex Wyatt
