Fantasy Summary

A solid defender, with decent tools and a good IQ. He isn’t great at anything but doesn’t lack in one specific area of his game either.

May 2023 – Powell followed up two good, but not great, seasons at Boston College with a very solid Junior campaign. He reached a career-high in point production, leading all defensemen on his team in scoring, and finished seventh in points among defensemen in the NCAA’s Hockey East division. That being said, Powell’s numbers on the scoresheet have never been his greatest asset, which is almost certainly his defensive prowess. His brain is built for the defensive zone, and he is often able to read plays in his own zone before they materialize thanks to his immense hockey IQ. His ability to put himself two steps ahead of opposing attackers has made him a valuable asset for Boston College. A strong Senior season for Powell could very well land him an entry level contract with the Lightning but is not a guarantee at this time. Wade Messier

October 2020 – Powell was drafted 116th overall by the Lightning. Powell is expected to spend at least two years in college before turning pro.  Jokke Nevalainen

September 2020 – One of the lesser talked about defenders in the 2020 draft, Powell put together a quietly good season with the U.S. National Team Development Program. He isn’t a flashy player but he does a lot very well and doesn’t have any glaring holes in his game. He is a smart puck mover who makes good, crisp passes out of his zone and has the skating ability to evade pressure in order to do so. He lacks high-level top-speed which can hurt him in puck races but he often anticipates the play well enough that he can get a step or two on the attacker. He possesses a big shot that he likes to use from the right faceoff dot, beating netminders more often than a player with limited upside and a slightly undersized frame would be expected to. He will be playing at Boston College next season, a great place for a defender to develop and grow into his game. Tony Ferrari
