December 2020 – The Red Wings selected Barton out of the BCHL in the third round of the 2018 draft following a season in which he registered six goals and 27 assists in 49 games for the Trail Smoke Eaters. He has continued his career in the NCAA for UMass-Lowell, tallying five goals and 20 assists in 63 games over the course of the last two seasons. Barton is a quiet, but mostly effective, puck mover who sometimes struggles to process the game quickly and turns the puck over under pressure. He is capable defending the rush, with solid gap control and an active stick but his skating is not anything special. Barton will continue his development at UMass-Lowell and could develop into a third pair, puck moving defensemen if he adds some quickness to his decision making. Nick Richard
