June 2019 – The Rangers lost Virta’s rights on June 1st when they didn’t get him signed to an NHL contract. He is now a free agent who can sign an NHL contract with any NHL team. Jokke Nevalainen
October 2018 – Virta was one of the final selections made in the 2017 NHL entry draft. The over-age selection broke into the top league in Finland the year that he was selected, flying under the radar in the Mestis league the two years prior. Since being drafted by the Rangers, Virta followed up his draft campaign with an even more successful sophomore season in the Liiiga, tallying 40 points in 58 games as a 21-year-old. This summer, Virta signed a contract with the KHL’s HC Slovan Bratislava where he’s off to a respectable start and making moderate offensive contributions. There are many aspects of his game that require development before an NHL career becomes a reality, but the lightweight Finn possesses the raw skill to work off of. Brayden Olafson
