June 2025 – After a breakout offensively in the 2023-24 campaign in the Western Hockey League with the Portland Winterhawks, the Edmonton Oilers signed the son of former NHLer Patrik Stefan, an undrafted free agent, James Stefan, on March 21, 2024, to a three-year entry-level contract and assigned him to the American Hockey League (AHL) to play with the Bakersfield Condors. During the 2023-24 season with the Winterhawks, he scored 50 goals and added 51 assists for 101 points through 67 games, averaging 1.51 points per game.
In the 2024-25 season, Stefan failed to build off his breakout junior season, he played in 45 games with Bakersfield Condors in the American Hockey League, where he scored just three goals, and was assigned the ECHL Fort Wayne Komets; he produced nine points (six goals and three assists) in 12 regular season games.
Stefan should get a chance to start the 2025-26 season back in the AHL; with some adjustments, Stefan should find the scoring touch he showed in junior. It will be worth watching to see if Stefan’s 101-point breakout junior season in 2023-24 was a one-off or if he can regain his scoring touch and show why he earned an NHL contract as an undrafted free agent. Stefan is not worth rostering in fantasy unless he makes huge strides in his development. Mark Henry
