Albin Grewe

June 2023 – The 2019 third round draft choice signed a two-year contract with Djurgardens (HockeyAllsvenskan/Sweden). The team did not offer him an entry level contract and he no longer appears to be in the long term plans with the Red Wings organization as his exclusive draft rights expired on June 1, 2023. December 2020 – Grewe has been a fixture in Djurgarden’s bottom-six forward group through the early part of the SHL season. The point production has not been there thus far, but Grewe will have an opportunity to generate more offense against his peers when he suits up for Sweden at the World Juniors later this month. September 2020 – Grewe was selected by the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit in the CHL Import Draft this past June following a season in which he split time between Djurgården’s SHL and J20 squads. He tallied 19 points in 23 games for the junior team but managed just 1 goal across 19 games playing in Sweden’s top league. He has remained with Djurgården to begin the 2020-2021 season but is expected to make the move across the pond and join Saginaw at some point this season. Grewe’s strong skating and high motor combine to make him an effective forechecker. He plays with an edge and loves to get under the opposition’s skin while playing a solid two-way game. Grewe doesn’t possess high-end offensive talent but he isn’t totally bereft of skill either, and he will look to improve his offensive output this season. Nick Richard

September 2019 – Albin Grewe is an agitator with skill who models himself after Brad Marchand. He’s a good skater with a motor that doesn’t stop and a fierce competitor who loves to throw hits and inspire his teammates. Grewe was fourth on his team (Djurgarden SuperElit) last year in the Swedish junior league, with 34 points in 25 games and first in penalty minutes with 102. He will need to work on his top end speed and discipline to succeed at the NHL level.  Grewe projects as a bottom to middle-six winger with extra value in leagues that count hits and PIMs. Mark Hillier

February 2019 – Grewe has split this season between SuperElit and the SHL. He’s been an offensive force at the junior level but hasn’t been able to bring that similar offensive game to the pro level just yet. But he’s been given a good amount of games in the SHL with very limited minutes because he can be a great energy player on the bottom-six. Even though he’s not big, Grewe plays a power forward type game. He has a good shot, good puck-skills, good vision, and he’s a good skater. And most importantly, he works harder than most players on the ice. Currently, he’s able to combine that grinding power forward game with great offensive success at the junior level but it remains to be seen if he can do the same in the NHL. If he can, he could become a very valuable complementary top-six winger. But if he can’t, he can still have a very good career in the NHL as a bottom-six grinder. Grewe is likely to be drafted in the second round in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.  Jokke Nevalainen
