January 2018 – The talent with the puck is the hallmark of Jayden Halbgewachs, along with a last name that will give visiting announcers and play-by-play broadcasters fits. The dynamic center for the Moose Jaw Warriors was a camp invitee of the Vegas Golden Knights but left Sin City without a contract. Fast forward a half dozen months and the Warrior’s first round selection in 2012 Bantam draft now has the chance to see if his dominance of the WHL will translate to the professional game.

Halbgewachs, now in his fourth full-time season in Moose Jaw, saw limited action in rookie WHL season with just eight points in 59 games. His draft year saw a jump to a decent 41 points, but you need to wow scouts when you’re a small forward with undeniable skill. He did just that last year in a breakout performance of 50 goals and 101 points. The 2017-18 campaign is, somehow, off to an even better start with an astonishing 44 goals and 35 points in just 43 games. San Jose got good, long looks at the 5’8 center of the Warriors’ top line when they checked-in on former teammate Noah Gregor (since traded to the Victoria Royals) so they know what they are getting: an elite offensive weapon that is tenacious in the offensive zone that be both a shooting and passing threat anywhere near the opposing net. Fantasy Outlook: B-

With good-not-great feet, Halbgewachs does not have the high-end speedy, shifty skills you ideally want to see in a 5’8 forward. But the skills with the puck have to be respected along with nearly exponentially improving offensive numbers. Plus, skating can be improved and he’s starting with a good base.
