With Canada’s three major junior leagues in various stages of their preseason schedules, a few players have made their early marks. Here are several particularly noteworthy QMJHL efforts. While we can debate the value of preseason statistics in any league, there’s no denying William Lagrange’s efforts in four contests have been impressive. At age 16, [...]
Pilfering Nolan Patrick in the 2017 entry draft is just one of the many reasons the Philadelphia Flyers are No. 1 in Dobber's rankings of the 31 NHL teams' prospect pools. Fans love lists. In fact, the only thing they love more than reading lists is picking holes in them because all fans are [...]
The Canucks made news this weekend when they signed veteran Thomas Vanek to a one-year, 2 million dollar deal. At this point in his career, Vanek is a successful journeyman who will likely bring back a draft pick at the trade deadline, making him a decent investment for a team still stockpiling young blood. But [...]
With North American hockey fans waiting impatiently for the return of NHL play, many have an eye on the Kontinental Hockey League. In the middle of their second regular season week, its 27 teams across Belarus, China, Finland, Khazakstan, Latvia, Russia and Slovakia feature widespread NHL prospects, former players, and potential future players. Andreas Athanasiou is stuck in neutral without an NHL extension because the Red Wings are over the cap limit and GM Ken Holland has yet to reach agreement on a contract with his young RFA. Starting with the big news over the weekend in the announcement that Hobey Baker winner Will Butcher has signed with the New Jersey Devils. By signing with the Devils, Butcher instantly becomes their top defensive prospect and should even be given an extended opportunity to make the NHL roster to start the year. What is [...]
*** I had planned to write about UFA Will Butcher's fit with whatever team he decides on, but it seems his life-changing decision schedule doesn't match up with my rambling schedule. But this weekend has provided me with some unanticipated UFA signings that are going to hurt people with prospects on the bubble. I hate [...]
Hobey Baker Award recipient Will Butcher will announce Sunday which NHL organization will get his professional services. If baseball people think the dog days are in August, they should think again. This is the slowest section of the hockey calendar, although there’s always something going on. NHL GMs not still in vacay mode [...]
The Kerfoot watch is over. It seemed a lock for many months that their 2012 fifth-round pick was not New Jersey-bound, trekking the unsigned draftee-UFA path that led ex-Crimson linemate and Predator selection Jimmy Vesey last year to Madison Square Garden, but now that it’s official it’s less a punch in the gut for the [...]
With college starting over the last couple weeks in the States, college hockey is just over a month away from getting cranked back up. Throughout the season, I'll have college hockey articles on DobberProspects just like last year, the first week of each month, keeping you up to date on the happenings en route [...]
