Fantasy Summary

A mobile, two-way defenseman with a booming shot, though he may need to be on a power play unit to be effective at higher levels.

Observations

March 2026 – Boumedienne scored the gold medal winner for Sweden at the World Juniors in January, which is as good a summary of his competitive makeup as any. A first-round pick last summer with elite skating and transition ability, the son of former NHLer Josef Boumedienne has posted modest numbers across two college seasons at Boston University – two goals and ten points in 35 games this year – but the defensive intelligence and acceleration at nineteen playing against grown men are the foundation of what projects as a legitimate top-four defenseman. The offensive upside scouts attach to him showed up at the World Juniors in ways it hasn’t yet consistently translated at the college level. He has added weight this year, going from 175 to 190 lbs on a 6-2 frame, which will only make him stickier at the pro level. A dynasty buy with top-four upside and plenty of runway ahead. August 2025 – Boumedienne may not blow you away with his offensive numbers, but he is a high-end defensive prospect. He is touted as an offensive defenseman who projects as a top power play option in the very near future. His puck skills, speed, and willingness to make high-risk, high-reward plays make him a prospect to watch. He needs to continue working on his defensive game and become more consistent on his end of the ice. There is a lot to like about Boumedienne’s game, but he needs time and opportunity to excel and take the next step in his development. The Winnipeg Jets have no reason to rush him, with the draft out of the way. Expect a big year from Boumedienne in 2025-26 at Boston University. He projects as a second-pairing defenseman with offensive upside and can play a role on the second power play unit. It will be his defensive development that determines whether he can be effective at the NHL level in 5-on-5 play. Add Boumedienne as one of your prospects on your dynasty team and wait for him to turn pro, like most young defenseman prospects in fantasy leagues. Be patient. He will prove his fantasy value when his time arrives as a full-time NHL player. Mark Henry

June 2025 – Selected 28th overall, Sascha Boumedienne is now a member of the Winnipeg Jets. Mark Henry

Final Rankings – Sascha Boumedienne, the BU freshman with a booming shot, struggled to adjust to the college level but finished strong at the U18s, breaking the tournament record for points by a defenseman (14). He has the tools for the next level, but questions remain about whether there’s a role in the modern NHL that fits his game.—Anni Karvinen

June 2025—Noted for his shot, transition play, and offensive involvement, Boumedienne’s skillset hasn’t translated to the NCAA game as well as hoped.

Coming into the season, it’s fair to say that Boumedienne was seen among the likes of Frondell, Eklund and Ekberg as the cream of the Swedish crop. While his early play for the Terriers didn’t reflect that, Boumedienne certainly improved over the course of the season.

That said, that was mostly an improvement to a competent college defender from a young defender who seemed far out of his depth. At this point, it seems unreasonable to project Boumedienne as dynamic offensive catalyst at higher levels. Continued refinements to his defensive positioning and physicality will likely dictate his professional success.—Luke Sweeney
