Fantasy Summary

A long-term project defenseman who has good mobility and plays a reliable defensive game in his own zone. Has not displayed much offence to this point.

Observations

June 2026 – Wanner re-signed a one-year contract with the Providence Bruins (AHL) for the 2026-27 season. Chris Babos

December 2025 – Since being traded to the Boston Bruins, Max Wanner has spent all his time in the American Hockey League with the Providence Bruins. So far, it has been tough for him to carve out a regular spot. He has been in and out of the lineup, and just as the Bruins’ injuries opened a potential window for him to show what he can do, he ended up getting hurt himself. This season, he has appeared in only seven games and is still looking for his first point.

With the depth Boston has on defense, Wanner is not particularly close to an NHL call-up. Even last season, he struggled to secure a consistent spot in Providence’s lineup and did not dress during the playoffs. When he has played this year, it’s been on the third pairing.

Wanner is a physical, hard-nosed, shutdown defenseman who fits the classic “Big Bad Bruins” mould. He’s tough to play against, battles hard in front of his own net, and does a strong job clearing shooting lanes for his goaltender. But offensively, he often looks a step behind; he does not always read developing plays well or get himself into positions to contribute. His offensive upside is limited, and that caps his overall impact.

From a fantasy perspective, Wanner is someone you can safely leave on the waiver wire. It’s not that he is a poor player; he plays his role reliably, but with slim odds of earning NHL minutes and little offensive production to lean on, there are far better fantasy options available. Kenny Kaminsky

June 2025– Wanner was traded to the Boston Bruins organization as part of the three-team trade with Edmonton and New Jersey. Wanner remains a big-bodied defenseman who plays a shutdown game and provides minimal offense. He may be worth keeping an eye on as a streaming option for peripherals if Boston has injuries next season, but he might not be fantasy relevant with how low his offensive production has been at all levels. Alex Wyatt.

October 2021 – Like most of Edmonton’s 2021 selections, Wanner was a bit off the board but in all fairness to the young defender, the seventh round tends to be a dart throw. The rangy rearguard plays a steady defensive game and moves around the ice well for a young 6-foot-3 player. He did not show a lot in terms of offensive upside for the Moose Jaw Warriors but every once in a while he would flash a bit of skill or a crafty play that makes a viewer think there might be more there. With the Warriors’ Daemon Hunt, Denton Mateychuk and Cole Jordan all being better options offensively, it is hard to see Wanner getting much offensive opportunity this season. With that being said, the young defender does have two assist through three games of the early WHL season. Jameson Ewasiuk
