June 2022 – Although his point totals did not explode this year, there was one specific area that Fontaine needed to improve, and that was his discipline. He passed with flying colours. In 2020-21, Fontaine averaged 1.38 penalty minutes per game; in 2021-22, he dropped that number to 0.51 penalty minutes per game. This one stat shows his commitment to growing and improving in all areas of his game, which is especially important for late-round picks such as him. Fontaine also scored eight goals and 25 points in 39 contests, good enough for third in team scoring. The next step is to become a truly dominant player at the NCAA level. He will have a chance to do so going into his junior year, and we will wait to see if he can rise to the occasion. Curtis Rines
May 2021 – In his first year at Northeastern, Fontaine was a primary contributor offensively. His 15 points through 21 games were good enough for fourth in team scoring. He offered a two-tiered attack showing the ability to finish plays and set up his linemates. In his transition to the NCAA, Fontaine also added a feisty element to his game and developed his forechecking and puck pursuit. He is still refining that area of his game as he racked up 29 penalty minutes. Next season, Fontaine will look to be selective and minimize his infractions in order to continue his regular shift and support offensively as he does best. Nicholas Kawka
October 2020 – With their second pick from the Chicago Steel program, Nashville selected Gunnarwolfe Fontaine. He is a scoring winger with a knack for puck possession and finishes. He is also defensively aware and gives a strong effort on both ends of the ice. Fontaine is most deadly with cruising through the center of the ice with the puck. His size enables quick edgework and he eludes defenders with strong head fakes and shoulder dips. He is very confident with the game on his stick and can finish as well as he distributes. His overage status limits his potential for growth, but he remains a potential late-round find. Nicholas Kawka
