Oliver Tärnström

June 2023 – Tarnstrom, the soon to be 21 year old, spent most of the last two last seasons with Rogle of the SHL.  In 2021-22, he appeared in 29 total games with Rogle’s “big club,” which consisted of Swedish Hockey League and Champions Hockey league games. The lefty center appeared in 31 games with Rogle at the J20 level posting 34 points. In 2022-23, the Swede appeared in 49 games with Rogle, 43 games in SHL competition, and in six CHL games posting a total of six points.  Tarnstrom also appeared in 12 games on loan with Tingsryds AIF in HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden’s second tier.  There, he posted six points in 12 games played.  For the 2023-24 season, he is signed to play for HockeyAllsvenskan’s Brynas IF, and will need to show growth throughout the upcoming season to remain in the Rangers’ future plans. Tarnstom’s signing rights with New York expire on June 1, 2024, so he has a little less than one year to convince the club that he deserves to be signed to an ELC. Brendan Ferry

July 2022 – Tarnstrom skated in 27 games for Rogle BK of the Swedish Hockey League during the 2021-2022 season, posting only three goals in 11 playoff games for Rogle. Additionally, he appeared in games in the J20 Nationell league, Hockey Allsvenskan, and with Sweden’s U20 International team. Tarnstrom posted 34 points in 31 games played for Rogle J20, but clearly struggled playing against men at the SHL level. He is on Rogle BK’s roster for 2022-2023, and is signed in Sweden through the 2023-2024 season. Tarnstrom, the son of former NHLer Dick Tarnstrom, is hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps in earning an NHL contract. His signing rights with New York expire on June 1, 2024.  Brendan Ferry

October 2020 – The New York Rangers selected Tärnström in the late third-round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The 18-year-old has a solid foundation of technical ability in addition to a strong aptitude for the offensive aspects of the game. His physical maturity has a ways to go, but the Rangers’ can certainly afford to let him develop overseas for at least three years. After getting his toes wet in the HockeyAllsvenskan league last year, his next milestone will be making the full step into the second-tier Swedish league with AIK where he can begin to morph into a stronger two-way player as well as elevate his strength.  Brayden Olafson
