Prospects on the move

Welcome to the Thursday ramblings, I figure one of us should go over the prospects moved after the trade deadline (a continuation of Hayden’s ramblings here: https://dobberprospects.com/prospect-ramblings-trade-deadline-catch-up-notes/). The picks don’t really matter because of all of the conditions and years and who knows who they will chose.

Let’s get to it!

The Big one: Stone and T. Lindberg from Ottawa to Vegas for Brannstrom and 2nd and O. Lindberg

Erik Brannstrom (OTT) – In terms of prospect acquisitions Ottawa came out of the trade deadline as the winner, but as a return for 8+ years of Mark Stone I feel like Ottawa should have gotten more. The NHL will soon learn to fear a top two defense of Brannstrom and Chabot, especially when they run a powerplay. Brannstrom should be in the NHL next season and will eventually put up a lot of points, AKA when Ottawa gets some scoring forwards to support him.

In Vegas it felt like Brannstrom could have unseated Theodore from PP1 but in Ottawa all that can be hoped for is a time share between him and Chabot. Now that is not bad as they should be able to work together and rove around the powerplay enough to keep scoring in the 50’s. Be happy to own either but do not expect the points to come right away.

Tobias Lindberg (VGK) – He has essentially become a checking line forward in the AHL. Who knows, maybe Vegas can turn his career around. My best memory of Lindberg is trading him for Colin White when his hype was high.

The Odd One: Vancouver trades Dahlen to San Jose for the Sharks’ third Karlsson

Jonathan Dahlen (SJS) – I do not get the Canucks moving him, sure I read as well that he was not happy and wanted out, but how do you not convince him to stay? There are reports that the Canucks AHL affiliate has been terrible for some prospects development, including Kole Lind and Jonah Gadjovich. Olli Juolevi looked great before he got hurt, so it is all confusing. What it comes down to is that San Jose came away with the better player who should become a decent top six/nine scorer.

Interview with Dahlen on the situation from Fear the Fin: https://www.fearthefin.com/2019/2/27/18242765/2019-nhl-trade-deadline-jonathan-dahlen-vancouver-canucks-jim-benning-san-jose-sharks-barracuda

Linus Karlsson (VAN) – Karlsson is a good two-way player who can control the play on occasion in the offensive zone while being responsible in his own end. He does not have the upside of Dahlen but I would give him the slight edge in establishing an NHL career (as a bottom six player).

The Young Defenseman for an Even Younger Defenseman: Guhle plus a 1st for Montour

Brendan Guhle (ANA) – Guhle has been stewing away developing in Rochester until the trade to Anahiem and has yet to join the San Diego Gulls. Guhle is a smart two-way defenseman who fantasy GMs tend to overrate for his offensive abilities, when in fact he will be an NHL defenseman just not a 40+ scoring one (aside from a couple high percentage seasons). Montour is better on offense but Guhle is better in his own end.

The Likely Does Not Matter but Might if Everything Goes Right: Cliff Pu for Tomas Jurco

Cliff Pu (FLA) – Pu was demoted to the ECHL off of a stacked Charlotte Checkers team. Was he just not good enough to get in to the line-up ever or was he just wasted potential that Carolina gave away. I have always been a Pu fan and had no idea how he fell to round three but he did. He looked great in the OHL but his AHL time has been not good. Hopefully he can develop and become a scoring middle six player. He may have more of a chance in Florida since they give skilled players away and then need more.

Tomas Jurco (CAR) – I have always been a Jurco fan and feel he has not ever really been given a fair shake to score long term, especially under Coach Q in Chicago. Injuries have really derailed his career but now he will go to a Calder Cup favorite team in Charlotte in hopes of reviving his career. A team needing scoring would be smart to take a chance but I hear Europe/Russia calling.

Thanks for reading. I could not send a ramblings about prospects to unload on the weekend because my computer decided it wanted to update for a day. Thankfully it is all good now.
