Philip Samuelsson

February 2017 – Montreal traded Samuelsson to Carolina, which will reunite him in the AHL with his father Ulf, a former NHL bad boy blueliner who’s now head coach of the Charlotte Checkers. Philip was dealt for fellow defenseman Keegan Lowe, another second-generation player who’s the son of former NHL defender Kevin Lowe. Samuelsson, 25, has one goal and four assists in 40 games with the St. John’s IceCaps this season. A physical D-Man, he has appeared in just 13 NHL games and is as fantasy-relevant as Lowe, which is not much. Both will be RFAs after this season. Mark Allan

July 2016 – The Montreal Canadians have signed Philip Samuelsson to a one-year, two-way contract. Samuelsson most likely provides the Canadians what he gave the Coyotes the last season: solid defenseman at the AHL level who is a good depth option if injuries hit the big club. Keith Duggan

June 2016 – The Coyotes did not tender a qualifying offer to Samuelsson, making him now a unrestricted free agent. This was surprising since Samuelsson had a strong year in the AHL and provided good depth to the Coyotes with not many defenseman prospects in the system right now. He racked up four goals and 31 points in 56 games with a weak Springfield Falcons team and appeared in four scoreless games with the Coyotes, playing a bottom six, depth role. Samuelsson could still have a NHL future but more as a seventh defenseman and won’t offer much fantasy wise. Keith Duggan

August 2015 – The Coyotes have signed Phil Samuelsson to a one-year, two-way contract. The 23-year old appeared in four games with Arizona in 2014-15, going scoreless. Samuelsson also recorded 5-15-20 and 31 penalty minutes in 51 games with Portland. Along with 0-4-4 and 20 PIM’s in 22 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL. He has a good chance of cracking the Coyotes as a depth defenseman but don’t expect much fantasy wise. Keith Duggan

December 2014 – The physical defender, son of former NHL bad boy Ulf Samuelsson, is no longer in Pittsburgh’s system. In a trade announced Dec. 5 by Penguins’ GM Jim Rutherford, Samuelsson went to the Arizona Coyotes for forward Rob Klinkhammer and a conditional 2016 draft pick. Fourth-year pro Samuelsson, 23, played in 197 games with AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton from 2011 to 2014, amassing 45 points and 182 penalty minutes. He is scoreless in five games with Pittsburgh. Arizona GM Don Maloney expects to recall Samuelsson later this season. Mark Allan

December 2014 – Philip Samuelsson has been traded to the Arizona Coyotes for Rob Klinkhammer and a conditional fifth-round draft pick in 2016. Samuelsson will report to Portland of the AHL, where he will play with brother Henrik, but the Coyotes expect he’ll make an appearance later in the season. With lots of quality defense prospects in Pittsburgh this gives Samuelsson a fresh start and a better NHL opportunity with the Coyotes. Keith Duggan

November 2014 – The physical defender continues to learn his trade in the American Hockey League, registering two assists in 17 games with Wilkes-Barre Scranton. A minus-5 rating indicates he still has some lessons to learn. Mark Allan

October 2014 – The son of former NHL bad boy Ulf Samuelsson is trying to make it as a defensive defenseman without the rampant cruelty of his father, who played five seasons with the Penguins in the first half of the 1990s. At this young stage of his development, Philip is taller than his dad, yet is lighter. He needs to get stronger and improve his skating (especially the first step). Alert in his own end, he must eliminate occasional passivity to improve his reliability enough to play with the big boys. Philip’s upside includes skillful poke-checking, good positioning, getting the puck out of his end and a hard point shot. Since the 2008-09 season with the USHL’s Chicago Steel, he has posted modest offensive totals while getting playoff experience with Boston College (including a Frozen Four title), and experiencing post-season action the past two seasons with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate. After going pointless in a five-game 2013-14 NHL audition, he had two assists, seven PIMs and was minus-2 in his first four AHL games this season. Mark Allan
