Fantasy Summary

AHL goaltender who struggled as an NHL injury fill-in

Observations

March 2022 – Miska’s opportunity as a third-string goalie has likely expired. His AHL numbers have plummeted to a 0.839 sv% in just 7 games and the rookie Annunen has stepped up from a tandem goalie to a starter and the veteran has done little to change the situation. His contract expires at the end of 2021-22 and he will most likely have to settle for an AHL deal next year. His faint fantasy value as a streaming option is likely gone. Hayden Soboleski

February 2021 – Like clockwork, an injury in the crease has made 3rd-stringer Miska a factor in Colorado. With Francouz out longer-term than originally thought, Miska has served as the team’s backup for most of the season so far and has hit the ice in two contests so far. His results aren’t strong, currently 0 wins and a 0.881sv% which are both worse than he looks. The team should still win more than they lose with him in net which makes him a passable streaming option, but overall his below-average play and Francouz’s injury uncertainly will most likely lead to a new goalie option arriving before the deadline to support Grubauer. Hayden Soboleski

January 2021 – Miska is serving as the Avalanche’s 3rd goalie, waiting on the ‘taxi squad’ for if he is needed down the line. With both NHL goalies suffering injuries last year, there is a good chance he sees NHL action at some point either out of necessity or caution. Potential streaming value on those odd nights, since the Avs don’t often lose regardless of who is in net. Hayden Soboleski

October 2020 – Miska has signed a two-year extension with the Avs, keeping him as a call-up from the minors should injuries strike again in the crease. The 25-year could potentially play himself into NHL backup consideration with another strong campaign or two in the AHL, but more realistically he remains a solid a tandem minors goalie considering the higher potential of other prospects in the system. Hayden Soboleski

February 2020 – As a precautionary measure in case injuries arise later in the campaign, the Avalanche have signed Miska (previously on an AHL-only contract) to an NHL deal for the remainder of 2019-20. This makes him eligible for a call-up if needed, and he is the likely choice should that happen thanks to a sparkling 0.926 sv% through 20 games played for the Eagles, his highest total of his recorded career. He has been a great fit as a tandem partner for prospect Adam Werner, and there’s no reason to expect this to change until prospect Annunen’s Liiga contract expires. Hayden Soboleski

July 2019 – The Colorado Eagles have signed Miska to enter the battle for the crease in 2019-20. He is likely to be in a 1A/1B situation with Adam Werner who is just entering the AHL. Hayden Soboleski

June 2019 – Miska did not get a qualifying offer from the Coyotes which means he becomes an unrestricted free agent.  Jokke Nevalainen

June 2019- The Coyotes will not be offering a qualifying offer to Miska as he comes off his ELC, and the 23-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Miska never played poorly for Tucson but at the same time he didn’t play outstanding either. Factor in the Coyotes having a suddenly deep goalie pool with Adin Hill, Merrick Madsen, Ivan Prosvetov and others in the system, Miska didn’t have a place in Arizona’s future. In his 61-game AHL career, Miska recorded 32 wins, a 2.49 GAA and a .898 save percentage. He appeared in a single period for the Coyotes, sitting on the back of a 6-1 loss to the Red Wings last November. Keith Duggan

November 2018- With Antti Raanta hurt along with Adin Hill day-to-day with a lower-body injury, Miska has been recalled to the Coyotes. Darcy Kuemper is expected to get most of the starts with Raanta out but with his play up and down it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Miska possibly see some time between the pipes for the Coyotes. While his stats haven’t been great with Tucson((3-3 record, 3.11 GAA, .901 SV%), Miska’s been solid for them so far this season. Keith Duggan

August 2018- Miska spent his first pro season splitting the campaign with Adin Hill in Tucson. He played 36 of 68 games for Tucson, posting a .901 save percentage and 2.63 goals against average. His 22 wins were second among rookie goalies in the AHL. Miska was excellent on the road, posting a 13-3-0 record in opposing buildings, and perfect in overtime, leading Tucson to a 7-0 record in games that extended past regulation and into three-on-three sudden death. While Hill took over in the playoff’s, Miska pushed him throughout the year and stole starts from Marek Langhamer to the point where he left for the Czech League. Going into 2018-19, Miska is expected to split starts with Hill once again. Keith Duggan

November 2017- It’s been an impressive start to Miska’s first pro season in the AHL. The young goalie holds a perfect record at 5-0, and has posted fantastic numbers in his last five starts, .929 SV% with a 1.76 GAA. He’s had to split time in net for Tucson with Adin Hill and Marek Langhamer but Miska’s earning more starts with his stellar play. Keith Duggan

April 2017- The Coyotes added some depth to the goalie position signing Hunter Miska to an entry-level contract a week after he ended an impressive freshman season at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Miska posted a 27-5-5 record with five shutouts, a .920 save percentage and a 2.20 goals-against average for Duluth, which reached the NCAA title game where it lost 3-2, to the University of Denver. He was one of five finalists for the 2016-17 Mike Richter Award, which is given annually to the NCAA’s best goalie. Miska was the only freshman among the finalists. A late bloomer, he played forward up until high school when his team needed goalies and ended up switching positions, becoming a natural between the pipes. From there it was a quick rise up the ranks, joining the US National Team Development Program at 16 years old, earning an invitation due to his tremendous athleticism and potential upside, spending two seasons with the program. Then on to two seasons in the BCHL for the Penticton Vees and a year in the USHL putting up strong numbers for the Dubuque Fighting Saints. With Adin Hill and Marek Langhamer likely splitting duties in the AHL again next season, Miska probably starts the year in the ECHL. Keith Duggan
