Jonatan Berggren

April 2024 – The Red Wings need to do themselves a favour and give Berggren a serious shot in their top six. He leads the farm team in Grand Rapids in most meaningful categories by a wide margin: he is well over a point per game, while no one else is above 0.7 points per game. Billed as more of a playmaker than sniper, he is possibly taking out his frustration at still being in the minors by shooting the puck more. His 3.1 shots per game also lead the team by a wide margin, and his 24 goals are not that far behind the combined total of the Griffins’ 2nd- and 3rd-best goal scorers. In 12 games with the parent club this year, Berggren has a point in half of them. Oddly, in that limited action with the Wings, he was given the second-least number of starts in the offensive zone (behind only Mo Seider), acquitting himself decently in terms of play-driving. It is just a matter of time until he is putting up points in Detroit. How many will depend on his eventual role. Ben Gehrels

October 2023 – The 23-year-old winger was assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. After playing in 67 games with the Red Wings last season, he appears to be a victim of the numbers game in Detroit. A massive free agent overhaul during the offseason, leaves the 2018 second-round pick on the outside looking in. With the team carrying three goalies  to begin the year, a player like Berggren, who doesn’t need to be placed on waivers to be assigned to the AHL, will likely find himself skating with the Griffins for at least part of this upcoming season. The 5-11 Swedish winger was productive in his first season in Detroit registering 15 goals and 13 assists while averaging just over 13 minutes a game. He is still worthy of a roster stash in most dynasty formats and projects to be one of the first forwards called up when injuries occur. Evan Sabourin

May 2023 – Berggren scored for Sweden in a 7-1 rout of Hungary at the IIHF World Championships on Thursday. He has four points in four games for the Tre Kronor in Group A play. Berggren made a favorable impression with the Detroit Red Wings during his NHL debut in the 2022-2023 season. The 22-year-old played in 67 games for Detroit and registered 15 goals to go along with 13 assists. Berggren played up and down on all four lines but played really well when in a top six role. He flashed some brilliant offensive upside as a playmaker in the offensive zone this season. The 2018 second round draft pick projects to be a second or third line winger for  the 2023-2024 season. He is a highly recommended stash in deeper leagues as his role will continue to expand in Detroit and could be a 40-50 point player as early as the 23-24 campaign. Evan Sabourin

June 2022 – Berggren transitioned to the AHL for the Grand Rapid Griffins in 2021-22 after several years of playing in the SHL. His final SHL season saw him break out for nearly a point per game and he was able to continue this production in the AHL. He led the Griffins in points and was second in points per game. His best asset is his hockey IQ, particularly his vision. This allows him to create lanes for teammates and generate scoring chances. He has a good shot, he just needs to use it more. He will be a stronger fantasy asset in points-only leagues as his hits and blocks will be minimal. Look for Berggren to challenge for a spot out of camp and if he can find chemistry with top Red Wings players, he could have a strong season. Another year dominating the AHL wouldn’t be a bad thing though. If all breaks right, he could hit a 60-65 point pace. -Victor Nuño

April 2021 – After dealing with injury after injury the last few seasons, Berggren managed to stay healthy and he looked absolutely phenomenal. His playmaking is incredibly refined and he does a wonderful job of passing through layers and finding teammates all over the ice. His shot is still a work in progress but improvement is noted. There is so much to like in Berggren’s game and the hype of his skillset in his draft year that led many to rank him as a first-round prospect is starting to show. Berggren needs to get stronger, continue to round out his 200-foot game and develop but the offensive tools and skill are evident every time he steps foot on the ice. It won’t be long before he’s doing so with the Winged Wheel on his chest. Tony Ferrari 

December 2020 – Berggren has been a force for Skelleftea so far this season and finds himself tied for second in SHL scoring through the early part of December. After dealing with injuries for much of the last two seasons, Berggren is beginning to display the elite vision and passing ability that had some scouts discussing him as a potential first-round pick back in 2018. September 2020 – Berggren was enjoying a solid 2019-2020 campaign before suffering a season-ending injury in January. He played at a 0.5 point per game pace as a 19-year-old for Skelleftea in Sweden’s top professional league and was a key player for the Swedish World Junior squad with five points in seven games. He will look to build off of last season as he continues his development with Skelleftea in 2020-2021. The 33rd overall selection in 2018, Berggren was chosen for his offensive upside. He is a slick puck handler and a smooth skater with above-average vision. He is not scared to attempt high-risk passes but shows a tendency to rush plays under pressure. His lack of size and strength has been an issue against stronger opponents and it has caused problems for Berggren in one-on-one battles as well as when he is forced to play through traffic. He will have to improve in these areas if he’s going to make effective use of his offensive skills at the next level. Nick Richard

February 2019 – After being selected by the Red Wings early in the second round at 33rd overall, fans were excited to see what Jonatan Berggren would do in his draft plus one year. Things don’t always go as planned however, as a back injury has kept the young Swede sidelined for the entire season so far. When he is healthy, Berggren could be described as an energetic and dynamic finesse winger who is fast, strong on the puck and competes at a high level. He is a great skater with very good edgework and can dart in and out of traffic in tight spaces to avoid defenders and generate offence. Berggren likes to deliver hits and doesn’t mind taking one either. His shot is not NHL ready but he knows how to find the weak spots on goaltenders, especially in close. Berggren is perhaps underrated and may turn out to be a steal even as an early second-round pick. He projects as a top to middle-six winger who may take a bit longer to develop the strength to be an effective NHL player at both ends of the ice. Mark Hiller

June 2018 – One of the draft’s biggest risers this season, Berggren is a player that is easily loved. His feet are always moving. He’s pushing play in the right direction. He owns tremendous puck skills, and high-end vision and isn’t afraid to unleash a heavy shot. The  17-year-old had an amazing season in the Swedish J20 circuit, leading that league in points with 57 in 38 contests. He looked confident in a bottom-six role during his 12-game SHL stint but saved his best work for the international stage. The powerful skating forward had a strong start to his year at the Ivan Hlinka where he scored three goals and five points in five games on route to a bronze medal. He followed that up with a goal and four points at the Five Nations tournament. Finally, he concluded his season with a beastly performance at the U18 World Championships. There he led Sweden in scoring with five goals and 10 points in seven tournament games to lead the Swedes to a bronze medal. He was a buzz-saw player and drew attention during all situations. He’s the type of player that coaches, teammates, and fans will love. Cam Robinson
