Fredrik Karlström

April 2023 – Karlstrom suffered a season-ending injury and will not play for the remainder of the regular season or the playoffs. Taylor Newby 

June 2022 – Karlström completed his first North American season, playing 65 games for Texas and earning 29 points and earning three NHL games in which he earned his first assist with the Dallas Stars. Karlström looks like a player who could be challenging for a roster spot out of training camp. His big frame and aggressive game make him a great fit for Dallas’ bottom six, with his offensive game potentially improving with some more talented linemates. If Karlström stays in the AHL this upcoming season, expect him to slot in as Texas’ third-line center. Aaron Itovich

April 2020 – Karlstrom’s time in the SHL to this point in his career has been quite uneventful as he barely made Linkoping’s roster in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. The tools that the Dallas Stars’ scouts saw in Karlstrom before the 2016 draft started to become apparent once he left Linkoping to join the Vaxjo Lakers HC to start this past season. His 20 points doubled his point total from last season (19 of which were even strength as well), and his coach rewarded him with an average of 11:58 of ice time. Karlstrom ended the season as the sixth highest scorer on his team which leads me to think the Swede has at least earned a shot at an ELC for next season. I do not think Karlstrom will ever flourish in a top six role in the NHL but he does hold value as a versatile bottom six player who can put up 30-40 points in a secondary scoring role. Jordan Lambe

July 2017 – Karlstrom played 45 games in the Allsvenskan league, and showed progress in playing against higher competition. He tallied 24 points in those games and looks to be progressing nicely. It sounds like he’ll play next year in the Swedish Hockey League, which is the highest level of competition in Sweden, for the Linkoping HC. It’s nice to see him progressing to more skilled leagues. Karlstrom is likely one more year away from North America. Matt Kowalski

June 2016 – With their 3rd-round-pick in the 2016 draft, the Stars drafted another power forward in Karlstrom. He fits the Stars’ preferences – he has a large frame, is a great skater, and possesses an aggressive tendency. Frederick steadily produced points at the lower junior leagues in Europe, but not nearly as well in the elite. It will be interesting to see how he deals with the more skilled competition and where his development is after he sees it for a longer period of time. He is staying in Europe next year to play in the AIK SuperElite junior league. The Stars will give him time to fill out his frame. This one feels like a longer term project for the Stars. – Matt Kowalski
