Prospect Ramblings: Prospect Leading Shot Totals

Pat Quinn

2020-09-23

Welcome back to the Thursday prospect ramblings. This week I am going to go over the rookie, drafted prospect, and 2020 draftee shot totals in various leagues. You may be wondering why I am going over this but I have found that high shot totals are good indicators of future/helpful fantasy production whether that be big or small. Also, there are times where it does not quite work out but that is how prospects always are, a whole bunch never work out. If you can identify some to watch, they could help you in your keeper leagues in the future.

First, here are my #GoodTweets of the week(s):

***********

I am going to go through the NHL, AHL, OHL, WHL, and QMJHL shot total leaders

NHL

The top 22-rookies in the NHL in shots are

NHL GP Shots on Goal Shots on Goal per Game
Dominik Kubalik 68 157 2.31
Nick Suzuki 71 138 1.94
Denis Gurianov 64 132 2.06
Victor Olofsson 54 127 2.35
Quinn Hughes 68 126 1.85
Adam Fox 70 125 1.79
Jack Hughes 61 123 2.02
Cale Makar 57 121 2.12
Matt Roy 70 112 1.60
Kaapo Kakko 66 109 1.65
Kirby Dach 64 101 1.58
Ethan Bear 71 99 1.39
Ilya Mikheyev 39 98 2.51
Emil Bemstrom 56 97 1.73
Alex Nylander 65 94 1.45
Dante Fabbro 64 92 1.44
Martin Necas 64 88 1.38
Blake Lizotte 65 87 1.34
Sam Steel 65 85 1.31
Vladislav Gavrikov 69 81 1.17
Joel Farabee 52 81 1.56
Philippe Myers 50 78 1.56

I did not expect to see Nick Suzuki in second, but had Olafsson not been hurt then he would likely have placed second rather easily

Top 15 rookies in shots on goal per game from the top 25:

  1. Ilya Mikheyev – 2.51
  2. Victor Olofsson – 2.35
  3. Dominik Kubalik – 2.31
  4. Cale Makar – 2.12
  5. Denis Gurianov – 2.06 (Quite surprising as he had low ice time and minimal PP time all season)
  6. Jack Hughes – 2.02
  7. Nick Suzuki – 1.94
  8. Quinn Hughes – 1.85
  9. Adam Fox – 1.79
  10. Emil Bemstrom – 1.73
  11. Kaapo Kakko – 1.65
  12. Matt Roy – 1.60 (One to watch in LA)
  13. Kirby Dach – 1.58
  14. Philippe Myers – 1.56
  15. Joel Farabee – 1.56

I want to highlight the shooting percentages for a few players, so you can draft appropriately for the next season. Meaning, do not expect the same type of goal production for high percentage shooting players and expect more goals from the low percentage shooters

High shooting percentages:

  • Dominik Kubalik – 19.10%
  • Martin Necas – 18.20%
  • Victor Olofsson – 15.80%
  • Denis Gurianov – 15.20%

Low shooting percentages:

  • Matt Roy – 3.90%
  • Jack Hughes – 5.70%
  • Quinn Hughes and Adam Fox – 6.40%
  • Kirby Dach – 7.90%

AHL

Here are highlighted players as I left a lot of career AHLers off of the list

AHL GP SOG SOG/GP AHL Rookie (Y/N) NHL Team
Joel L’Esperance 58 194 3.34 N DAL
Eeli Tolvanen 63 191 3.03 N NSH
Jake Walman 57 173 3.04 N STL
Alex Barre-Boulet 60 172 2.87 N TB
Charles Hudon 46 161 3.50 N MTL
Josh Norris 56 160 2.86 Y OTT
Alex Formenton 61 158 2.59 Y OTT
Jack Studnicka 60 154 2.57 Y BOS
Nick Merkley 54 148 2.74 N NJ
Jake Bean 59 142 2.41 N CAR
Daniel Sprong 44 139 3.16 N WSH
Evan Bouchard 54 139 2.57 Y EDM
Jason Robertson 60 139 2.32 Y DAL
Oliver Wahlstrom 45 134 2.98 Y NYI
Brandon Hagel 59 126 2.14 N CHI
Nico Sturm 55 125 2.27 N MIN
Owen Tippett 46 124 2.70 N FLA

Nothing crazy to note here except:

  • I wish an NHL team would give Hudon a chance
  • Walman likely is not an NHLer but there is still a chance. Sheltered and on the PP

Top 15 shots on goal per game:

  1. Charles Hudon – 3.50
  2. Joel L’Esperance – 3.34
  3. Daniel Sprong – 3.16 (Capitals need to give him a top 6/9 change)
  4. Jake Walman – 3.04
  5. Eeli Tolvanen – 3.03 (Skating still not the greatest but how can Nashville keep him in the NHL?)
  6. Oliver Wahlstrom – 2.98 (Great to see as people were questioning his development this season)
  7. Alex Barre-Boulet – 2.87 (Another skilled Tampa signee)
  8. Josh Norris – 2.86
  9. Nick Merkley – 2.74 (As a Devils fan I hope this translate to the NHL)
  10. Owen Tippett – 2.70
  11. Alex Formenton – 2.59

  13. Jack Studnicka – 2.57

That is all for this week’s ramblings and while it may not seem like the greatest indicator of future production, but I have found that players who continue to put up high shot totals consistently through their development turn out to be top six players more often than not. If the players do not hit the top six upside, usually they prefer to shoot and can put up the shot totals to make them sneaky good adds for multi-category H2H leagues.
